Is it ok to put seed in a deep freeze?
I have a mouse problem and am afraid they'll find them no matter where I put them.... I do have 2 cats, but my daughters won't allow me to use cheap traps and I can't afford a livetrap right now.
Susan
Freezing seed ok?
Susan,
Yes, you can freeze seed. You can also store seed in the refrigerator in an airtight container. I put seed packets into a Ziploc bag and then in the fridge or into the Ziploc bag and then into a jar with a tight fitting lid.
Glue traps work great for catching mice and are quite inexpensive.
With all due respect to your daughters, tell them to jump off a cliff. Mice are not something you want in your home. Buy whatever kind of traps you can and get rid of the mice ASAP. Mice reproduce very quickly and you need to get rid of them right away. Mice are rodents and while they do have their place in the world (mainly as food for other creatures), their place is not in your home. Mice can carry parasites that you don't want in your home either.

Thanks for the reply!
I agree with your two cents. I will just set mice traps and let my daughters fuss. We do have 2 cats but they are not earning their keep. We do live close to some woods so the vermin re-infest every once in a while no matter how much we keep them down.
Glad to know the seeds can be stored in the freezer, I do have room in a big freezer and it would be convenient.
Susan
i wouldnt but annual seeds in the freezer.
I recently read that spinkling cayenne pepper will usually repel mice.
As long as seeds are DRY when you store them, and they are stored in a container that allows no moisture to get to them (air-tight container), they can be frozen without a problem.
With seed it does not make a difference whether the plants are annual or perennial, either can be frozen or refrigerated, following the guidelines that KayJones has stated above.
Mike
will you lern something eveyday i never thought that annual seeds could be frozen
I have always stored my seeds in the freezer. I found some (3) cucumber seeds from a great aunt labeled with the year 1987 which I thought that I had used up and failed to replenish and sure enough when planted last year, one seed germinated. It had not been THAT long since I'd cleaned out my freezer. (-:
I agree with treelover3. Not only do rodents carry insects that carry diseases, their feces and urine carry viruses and bacteria some of which can cross over to people and pets.
Some of the nasty "new" dseases that are discovered were fopund to come from dust from dried rodent poo.
It's fine to love all living things - in their proper places!

Corey,
Yes, I believe Hantavirus is one of the viruses associated with mice feces.
I've only heard of Hantavirus being found in the Southwestern US, but that does not mean it cannot be elsewhere, as well. I seem to remember hearing that people became infected when they were using a broom to sweep up mice feces off of the floor or using a vacuum to get the droppings up off of the floor.
