August Off Topic

Gail,
Thank you so much for the offer. They are only about 4-5 dollars here for a quart pot (when you can find them).I know it's silly, but the reason I overwinter it.......and some other things that are annuals here is just because it's such a trooper.......through drought, tornados near by,critters munching on it,huge tree branches falling and breaking it.....LOL.
This is the same plant in 2002.

They are tough plants for sure and I never get tired of the red or pink ones............nice pic.

Lynn, your hostas are beautiful, I have alot of them too, though right now they have been reduced by half by the deer family that spends the wee hours hanging in my backyard. (really, its a family, I have seen them, mama, daddy (complete with rack) and 2 fawns...

In the "foliage" pick, what is the spotted plant on the right? That is really neat looking

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

jmp,I really don't have too many Hostas anymore.I lost some over a tough winter, but that bed is getting full enough anyway. The spotted plant is a lungwort.I can't remember which one right now,but it has pretty pink and blue blooms in the spring. That bed is mostly shade,so I enjoy mixing different foliages. That way when nothing is in bloom it still looks nice.
Deer are so cute, but it's rare to see them around my neighborhood,so I don't lose plants to them.

Gail, that is an interesting Haworthia, do you know which one it is?

Ibrabec/Lynn: Love those blooms! Black Eyed Susans are one of my favorites! I used to have a large area in the corner of the backyard that was full of them but my hubby kept mowing them down, Grrr! A lot of stuff looks like weeds to him. I had a small milkweed that had been chewed up by butterfly larvae and what was left of it, he whacked down with his weedwacker ... I'm hoping it will return from the roots!

I love cane begonias, dragonwing/angel wings ... so pretty. I have one (Begonia 'Benigo') that I've had for many years but it's been suffering lately and what used to be a huge plant is now just one small pot, the freezes this past winter hit it hard.

Well, another strong storm is coming through again so I better shut down the computer! We had horrible storms yesterday and again today, lots of thunder and awful lightning.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I would have to go back and ask viostrep what she sent. She sent me the name but I am sure I can't find it...........isn't it a pretty one.......I was told to give it more water to avoid the brown tips..........

Please send us a storm..........no rain since Jan 1................

Phoebe: Your photography skills are amazing! What Gorgeous blooms! Ok, I want to know what those two plants are! BEAUTIFUL!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lin--They are just noid dahlias--I can try to get the names

(Zone 1)

I tried growing Dahlias one time but they didn't do well for me. I'm sure it was something about the location I planted them because I've heard they do well down here.

I absolutely love that first one so if you come across the name, I'd be interested in knowing which it is!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Phoebe,
Your pictures put mine to shame!!

Lin,
Glad to see you back.I hope the storms didn't hurt anymore of your plants.I have also been through the weedwacker thing.......the lawn guy.......##@@~~**

(Zone 1)

Lynn, Yes, we've had some awful storms lately ... real doozy's! We'll be watching the weather reports all this next week ... two tropical systems out in the Atlantic ... one may be tropical storm strength and one probably going to be the first Atlantic hurricane this season.

Don't ya just wish those weedwhackers could be banned? I sometimes really have to watch my husband when he has one in his hands!

(Zone 1)

I've been back out in the yard this afternoon taking some bloom photo's. I'm being careful when I'm out there walking around, weeding etc. I sure don't want to step on a snake! Jim: I think that snake in my earlier photo is just a black snake but to me a snake is a snake is a snake! I am so afraid of them! My husband said he couldn't believe I even stayed out there to take a picture of one ... usually I run in the house when I spot any snake. There have been quite a few folks around central florida bitten by pygmy rattle snakes the past couple of months! Scary! One guy who was bitten a few months ago still has no feeling in his hand or arm. Believe me I am sooo careful when at any garden center nowadays too ... a few folks bitten by the pygmy rattlers at both Home Depot and Wal-Mart garden centers here too! I used to think nothing of reaching back into a group of plants to pick the best looking one! Not any more!

I got a shot of a Bee on a Salvia bloom ....

I posted a photo at the top of this thread of a bloom on a huge Hibiscus bush in the backyard. Today when I was outside I found a bloom on a little cutting I rooted from that bush. It's just a common Florida red hibiscus but the blooms are pretty.

This is a plant I got in trade from Gail a year or so ago. I still haven't planted it in the ground where it will get really huge ... eventually I will decide on a spot for it.

C'mon y'all ... I don't want to be a thread hog here, lets see some of your pretty blooms and foliage.

This is the last one for me. It's actually a Gessie but not a pretty one (my fault for not taking care of it!)

Chrysothemis (I think that's the correct spelling ... too lazy to go look it up but I think that's close!)

Thumbnail by plantladylin
(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Love your pictures Lin....especially the yellow!! I only have one Chrysothemis and the top grows fine, but the lower leaves die.The bottom of the stem always looks a little translucent (SP),like when something is overwatered....but it's not. Do you think I should move it outside?

Lynn

(Zone 1)

LOL ... Lynn, I am not the one to give advice on Chrysothemis. I originally bought two a year ago and one died and this one is just barely hanging on! It does the same as yours, the lower leaves get ratty looking and die and fall off. Mine also seems to get long and lanky so I'm thinking of cutting it off and trying to root the top. They sell them at our Home Depots for $3.99 in a quart size pot so I'm not losing much if it doesn't survive!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Well thanks for trying to help me!! ^_^. I either need to dig out some OLD Gessie material or contact Tommie. She sent me a beautiful start .There are nice pictures on the web,but all the info I have found says grow them like AVs.That is not working for me!!

(Zone 1)

This is the one I have that our Home Depot's carry: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72716/

Gee, I think I see why mine hasn't done so well. This site says to treat it like Plumeria, that it goes dormant and you should let it dry out in winter.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

That's the same one I have.I guess I will cut off the top and try to root it.If the bottom dies, there should still be rhizhomes.

(Zone 1)

I have to apologize! I didn't even know Gail had begun an off topic thread for August outside blooms. I'm really getting old! I've been lurking on different threads today and looking through the AV forum list I found Gail's thread! I guess I was looking for something that said OT or Off Topic when I started this thread, and she labeled her thread "August Outside Plant Pictures" - now how in the world did I miss that?!%#

... lets move back over to that thread and continue posting our outside garden photos for the remainder of August: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1022542/

I'm going to go see if I can find something new blooming to take a picture of!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I am so silly I didn't even know that OT meant Other Topics.............I thought it was Outside Thread.............(LOL)

(Zone 1)

LOL, Gail ... for me it stands for "Off Topic", same thing though as Other Topic. Your thread heading of "August Outside Plant Pictures" makes it much easier to understand what the thread is about!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL

The second bud opened on my no-name Cattleya orchid. It's a cloudy, rainy day here but I was able to get a picture between rain showers.

I love the Catts best of all, Lin! That one is fabulous with the two colors of lavender and purple.........

South, TX

That is beautiful!

(Zone 1)

Thanks ladies! Early this morning I could detect a slight sorta citronella fragrance. I am finding Catts do better for me that some of the others ... of course they might all do better if I paid more attention to them and fed them regularly!

Posting in two places this tiny tiny bloom on an orchid. The plant is covered in them but they are not more than 1/2" across.

Medford, NJ

ooooh, Gail that IS pretty!

Lin, it's Encyclia fragrans. And fragrant it is!

(Zone 1)

Oooh, fragrant too! That makes it even more special!
