These caterpillars are all over my passion flower vine. Should I cut the vine? It's above 90 degrees every day. Or should I wait? Are they beneficial or bad?
Thanks,
Bell
CLOSED: A red caterpillar with black spikes? Is it good or bad?
bellfoster, I think you have a caterpillar of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/9/
http://bugguide.net/node/view/205746/bgimage
They do like feeding on passion-flowers and in quantity can be quite destructive, but the butterflies are so attractive that most people would welcome them in their garden.
In general this is not the place to ask for identifications. We have a forum on Bug and Insect Identification here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bugid/all/
and if you post your question there, you may get some help,
If you have an image, you can attach it to the message you post for a better chance of getting an identification
