I have photos of several dragonflies and damselflies that I would like to post in BugFiles but I'm not an entomologist and I don't want to enter them under the wrong species. All of these were taken in either eastern or northern Nevada around springs and streams.
Here is #1, Blue-eyed Darner?
CLOSED: Need to confirm ID of several odonates
I have a couple more photos at home including a really good one of a clubtail. I'll post those later.
Nevada Odonates
1. This does appear to be a male blue-eyed darner, Rhionaeschna multicolor - see http://tinyurl.com/mestgm for an image.
2. Image too small/unclear to determine.
3. This appears to be a male hoary skimmer, Libellula nodisticta - see http://tinyurl.com/r7ypdq
4. This appears to be a male desert whitetail, Plathemis (formerly Libellula) subornata - see http://tinyurl.com/nx4g7h
5. This most likely is a red rock skimmer, Paltothemis lineatipes - see http://tinyurl.com/lk2g7y
6. This appears to be a female desert whitetail, Plathemis (formerly Libellula) subornata - see ttp://tinyurl.com/pjdjf8
7. Need a dorsal image.
8. This could b a male flame skimmer, Libellula saturata - see http://tinyurl.com/occc25
9. These do appear to be western red damselflies, Amphiagrion abbreviatum - see http://tinyurl.com/r3pcfh
10. Too teneral to tell.
11. This certainly could be a western forktail, Ischnura pervara - see ttp://tinyurl.com/na8yyo
12. This does appear to be a male western red damselfly, Amphiagrion abbreviatum - see http://tinyurl.com/q5mkl5
13. This does appear to be a male desert firetail, Telebasis salva - see http://tinyurl.com/m6oh5p
14. Clubtail - This could be a male russet-tipped clubtail, Stylurus plagiatus - see http://tinyurl.com/r4j3xe
Thanks for all the links suunto! I accidentally uploaded the uncropped version of #2. Here's a closer view.
#4 I had whitetail in my notes by typed in skimmer. I guess I had skimmers on the brain.
The markings for the russet clubtail don't quite seem right. What do you think of white-belted ringtail for 14? http://bugguide.net/node/view/128467/bgimage
I believe that the white-belted ringtail is a better match for #14; I'm embarrassed to have overlooked that. Unfortunately, i don't have time right now to have another look at the other two; if you don't get a response from someone else in a reasonable length of time, I'll have another go at them.
