Devil's claw

Coarsegold, CA

This is a photo of one of the many Devil's claw plants growing on our property. It is a California native and came to us on it's own. The pods are black when ripe and the fibers were used by native Americans in their basket weaving. If you see very finely woven baskets with black designs that's Devil's claw. They also used the seeds for oil and ate the roots. The plant was very important to our local tribes.

I had no idea it was such an attractive plant, as I have only seen the seed pod. Found some interesting info here: http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ww0801.htm
Thanks, pwagon!

They're such neat creatures. Coarsegold is a neat area also, though I've only been there once. BIL and SIL were living there, but are back up in Sonora now. Thanks for the photo of the Devil's Claw. I'll have to look up more info about that one....
