Seen in Sharon, MA today on the edge of a field. Thank you!
CLOSED: Butterfly ID
There are at least three species of fritillaries (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) that could occur in your area that have a similar appearance; the great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele), the aphrodite fritillary (Speyeria aphrodite), and the Atlantis fritillary (Speyeria atlantis) - see http://tinyurl.com/lechdg and http://tinyurl.com/mbuhtg for images and detailed information. Of these, I believe that yours more likely is a great spangled, but a view of the underside of the wings would be helpful.
I'm inclined to agree; see http://tinyurl.com/lechdg
The caterpiller is almost as cool looking as the butterfly
.
Thanks again suunto - you know your bugs!
