There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;

Amazing pics Linda .. 29 bears .. YIKES ..!!!

Love the colour of the water, reminds me of trips to BC from Ont either by car or rail and my reaction to the green of the Simon Fraser River ...

Thanks for sharing

I was really pleased with the roads. I remember them being so bad that RV's in front of use would bottom out on the ups and downs and twists of the Alaska highway. They've taken most of that out. As our friends that live in Whitehorse say, it's just a real highway now. We didn't have any trouble at all until about 6 hours from home in Cache Creek. They were doing some chip sealing, and I got a crick in the wind shield. Previously on that drive I lost a windshield, had a flat tire, and when we got to Whitehorse, the truck was so dirty you couldn't tell what colour it was. I was disappointed that I barely got the truck dirty at all.

The wildlife around Liard was amazing. There had been a big forest fire through there in June, so much of the wildlife was out by the road to feed. We saw only 2 moose, I wanted a photo of them for Bullwinkle but didn't get it. We saw lots of Caribou, a herd of Bison along with 10 calfs, 29 bears that included mostly black, a few brown, one grizzly crossed the road ahead of us so we gave it lots of room. We also was a mom black bear with her 2 small cubs feeding in the grass about 60feet from the road. We all slowed, but no one stopped.

I was also so reminded about the huge amounts of sunlight during the summer. At the summer solstice in Whitehorse the sun is up about 4:15 and sets about 23:45 We got home and the sun set just before 9., it was a hard adjustment.

My Alaskan sister and her husband just got back from a Yukon River trip in canoes and kayaks with 10 other people. Her pictures are gorgeous too. I remember seeing some of the area around Liard when we drove the Alcan Highway in 1980. Must get back that way some time.

I understand that all of the Alcan is paved now. Is the quality good? When we got to paved road in Alaska back in 1980, we were wishing for the gravel road in the Yukon because a simple grading would smooth it out and there was a lot of frost heave in Alaska's paved roads.

LOL, my friends in Whitehorse say it's like a southern highway, like a real hwy. The roads fine. Because it's summer we ran into about 8-10 areas where there's chip sealing going on, and a couple of areas that we have to follow the pilot car.When I drove it last in '92 I expected it to be the same, dirty, muddy, flat tire and cracked windshield. Really, the road it good now.

Liard is one of the beautiful places around, Liard and Muncho Lake.

Maybe Betty and Ann will be doing a road trip???

You just have to look out for all the RV's, Semi's and Caribou like in this photo.

Hi Linda,

Great pics! They really brought back memories. The one of the Northern Rocky Mountains at sunset (10:30 pm!) is stunning. Thanks for sharing them. A bit hard to come back down south, isn't it? :-)
