This was on our back screen door this morning. The body is 4.5 cm long, from tip of front leg to the bottom of the lower leg it's 12 cm long. Photo attached. We'd love to know what it is.

What is this LARGE insect?
Looks like a crane-fly to me.
This is a crane fly (Diptera: Tipulidae); likely in the genus Tipula - see http://tinyurl.com/lghdce for an example. Sometimes mistaken for a giant mosquito, they are completely harmless.
I grew up hearing them called "Skeeter Eaters" in Northern Michigan. But it is a crane fly and it's totally harmless :-)
