Help needed ...

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I have this cross from Antoinette that I can't seem to find a valid name. Maybe I can't see well enough and am mis-spelling how she wrote the tag.

It was one of her crosses. She labeled it (the best I can read):
Aogakiyama x Chocolate Silk Cross

I can't find any JMGs labeled "Aogakiyama" and it sure don't look anything like Chocolate Silk. But what do I know ... it may be picking up dominate genes from CS that I am not aware of...

I need to name this beauty. The blooms were very consistent. Can someone enlighten me about the name or ... help me to create a name for this beautiful vine? I hope to share with those here that want seeds...

Characteristics: Dark blue, with dark pink throat, and variegated leaves.

Dany - My vine has deep blue flowers, not deep purple. Mine is definitely "dark blue".

Possible name. :-)

Birmingham, United Kingdom

That's gorgeous

Does Antoinette still answer her email? I see she is no longer a DGr, what's up with that?

I often wondered whatever happened to Gourd...

Becky closest thing I had to that spelling was Augakiyama and it was a medium blue flower. I have also seen it spelled Aogakiyama. I know it isn't much help but an idea on the name at least.

Hi Becky, a friend who wishes to stay anonymous has some thoughts about Gourd's Aogakiyama x Chocolate Silk -

"The bloom looks like a blue variation of "Akatsuki no Murasaki" as entered in the PlantFiles here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/250288/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/80010/

"Aogakiyama was offered by Yamato-Noen as I had documented in the thread here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/859011/

"Jon might also be interested to have a look at the Yamato-Noen thread for the associated kana and kanji on the packets and in the catalog descriptions..."

---------------------
From me - Ooh! that is scrumptious - I'm currently growing out a vine of this one from gourd, too, and shall be anticipating it all the more - if I get enough seeds, I'll throw some in the pot for the ones showing interest in this thread. I miss her, too - she's left quite a void in her absence and I hope she comes back some day.

Dany - I will have seeds to trade with you of this one so that you can grow it out and decide for yourself if it is the elusive vine/bloom you've been searching for! :-)

Thanks Rareseedman (RSM). I'm going to start calling you that! Your screen name is too long for me to type at times! LOL!

Joseph - Antoinette elected to end her membership here on DG. I think a lot of people miss her! I am one as well who enjoyed her photos, posts, and cyber-friendship. I don't think she will want to come back. :-(

Marie - Ditto that!

Ronnie - I, too, was trying all different kinds of spellings. I did see a name reference or two by other members, but no photos to verify. Lovely lighter blue "Augakiyama ". Sure doesn't look like it either.

I DID collect a lot of seeds of this one, so should have plenty to share this Fall/Winter when all the trading and sharing is going on. The forum group seed swap should really be fun!!!

Karen - Tell you-know-who ... Thanks for trying to find an ID name for this vine. I, too, saw "Akatsuki no Murasaki" and thought it came to the closest to what this vine could be. I will check those links posted. That's a good idea about seeing if Jon can help us when he gets the catalog.

Jon - Let us know when you get the catalog. You might be able to match photos with names for us!

Karen - I am very interested to see what your blooms look like!

That is the most beautiful morning glory I have ever seen! I would love to trade with you when you get seeds if I have anything you would like.

Dany - Oh yes! It sure looks like it! I can't believe you found it! :-)

I wonder if Jon can translate this for us! That would be wonderful if we could give a cultivar name to this beautiful I. nil vine.

Yes,I hope Jon can help !
I find an other , but no name . Not exactly the same type of flower but the combination with the foliage is interesting.

Thank you beckygardener :) I was looking at another thread of yours. You have some beautiful morning glories. That pink one that looks like a rose. WOW! I didn't even know there were morning glories that looked like that. I have a few growing, but nothing as beautiful as yours.

Sorry my picture is blurry. My digital camera broke & having to use my phone as a camera for now.

Nice reddish pink I. purpurea you have there, ants! :-) For a digital camera on your phone, it's pretty decent! Mine takes horrible photos! =:-O

I mostly grow I. nils because the blooms are usually larger and the colors and patterns are pretty amazing! There are some nice species Ipomoeas if you can find them for trade or sale. You just have to watch for invasives or prohibited ones. BTW - The rose looking bloom is quite small - about 1 1/2 - 2 inches. But it is a cutie! Time will tell if it will grow enough to share. :-)

Marietta, MS(Zone 7b)

Thank you :) I do mostly have purpureas growing. I would love to find some of the nils. I have never seen a variegated morning glory.

The phone mostly focuses on the background and not what I am aiming at. I still try though. Some turn out alright :)

Here is a picture of another one I am growing.

Holy Moley! What are you feeding those vines???? It's a man-eater!

That is really beautiful! What is the name of your giant blooming vine?

I think you win the prize for the largest MG bloom, Dany! :-)
