"1964: The Prometheus Tree, possibly the oldest living non-clonal organism was cut down in Wheeler Park in eastern Nevada."

Anyone know why?

Yep, the wiki article has the details.

Note the DG link-formatting software has cut the close bracket from the formatted URL, you'll need to re-add that yourself

Grumble...that is what I feel like doing after reading the article. Won't bring the tree back.

IMHO, maybe it was the result of a bad judgement call in the rush to make a name. Oh well, who knows; it will not bring the tree back. Thanks for the link.
