How large is this beetle and where was it photographed? Also, could you post another photo? This one will not enlarge, and the copyright info obscures a good bit of it.

Hi Suunto, its about 3 - 4 mm long and was possibly imported with some wood, although I am not sure where from. It seems to be an ant type of beetle, but have never come across anything like this before.

It is possible that this is an ant-like flower beetle (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/ncxuyr for an example. There are quite a few species in this family reported from the UK. Also, ant-like leaf beetles (family Aderidae) can be similar in appearance - see http://tinyurl.com/nfvcrh for an example.
