RE: Does anyone know about Yucca's

Marshalls Creek, PA(Zone 6b)

This is the 1st year I have ever seen big seed pods on my Yucca plants. I would like to try and harvest them but I have no idea how tell when they are ready or how to do it. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thanks,
Darleen

Hi Darleen,

Wait for the pods to dry and start to split then you can cut them off and shake out the seeds .. or put a bit of panty hose around the pods to keep seeds from falling out of the pods.

You might want to pose this in the Cacti & Succulents forum .. I'm sure someone there can give you the info you need:

Well, Darleen, since you never know when a squirrel or crow or some other creature will try to make a meal out of the pods, or at the last minute a rainstorm come and beat them apart at the last minute, here is what I do with mine. I wait for them to begin to lighten up, likelight green/ yellowish color, then I clip them and put on a shallow dish in the sun on a screened porch so critters can't get at them, to finish drying, then, store in paper type bag. I have the white and a false yucca that is bright red/orange in color. The only difference in the two is the white one has sharp points that stick on the leaf ends and the red/orange is soft leaves. NO sticks. They both produce the seed pods. That is how I get mine to ensure no critters eat them or storms ruin the pods before I can get them.(but I do leave them on as long as possible then pull)

THANK YOU! both so much. I was thinking I had to wait till the pods turned brown so I'm really glad I asked now.
