This young tree is on it's 2nd year. In early spring it put out some very leggy branches, which I cut off. Now it is doing it again, and some of them are weeping- I want an upright tree. What should I do with it?
My Coral Bark Maple
I think JM's are wonderfully responsive to appropriate pruning.
I would definitely thin out the interior congestion.
Then prune the healthy new growth in the shape you desire.
It looks like a very happy JM, which should respond well to appropriate pruning.
Thanks-should I do it now or some other time?
I prune mine pretty much any time of year, except around time of bud-break in early spring.
Could you post a photo of what the tree should look like? I am guessing it should be "airy" looking and one should be able to see the frame of the branches? We have southerly prevailing winds here and all the trees sort of "lean", which does not add to their beauty! The tree looks healthy except for some of what I think is wind burn. By the way, it has several winged seed pods. Are they viable to try to propagate, and if so- what is the process? I really appreciate your input!
