I've recently just moved from the Northern US to the South and with all of the warnings of dangerous spiders I'm a little paranoid. I have many of these spiders shown outside and in. Their probably 1/4" in size. Can someone please help me identify this guy? I live in Southeastern Louisiana.
Your help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Spiders, spiders!
The image is not clear enough to be confident of a specific identification but I can assure you that it is not any of the Louisiana spiders known to have a dangerous bite - see http://tinyurl.com/lbmzar for detailed information.
Gardener63, welcome to the South. So far as I know, we only have three spiders that are considered nasties. The Black Widow, Brown Widow and Brown Recluse. All the others are just your "garden variety" spiders. The nasty ones seem to keep pretty well hidden. The Recluse likes to hide in piles of leaves or garden detritus, so, make sure you wear garden gloves when you are cleaning up leaves or moving mulch, compost etc.
Just remember, any spider can bite you if provoked and most of their bites hurt, but are not life threatening. You are probably in greater danger of being sucked dry by mosquitoes rather than hurt by spiders....GRIN
Read the (STICKY) post at the very top of this site....it is about spider bites.
