I have a nice stand of mixed oriental lilies planted in a ten foot row in my front yard. It looks great in bloom. Now its almost finished. I posted picture of them in my Cottage Garden look in the front yard thread. I would like to start another thick row of lilies in back of them. They are planted on a hill. Is there anything I can put that would be taller than the orientals and bloom after them? Thanks!
How can I expand the lily section?
rubrum maybe taller and definitely would bloom later. Or 'Uchida'.
I started to say that and lost my post! "Uchida" is a select clone from L. speciosum rubrum. There are also white ones: L. speciosum album. Also a species trumpet, L. formosanum, which is probably the latest blooming.
I don;t want really TALL like in skyscapers. I just thought tall or taller than the orientals would be nice. But what I would really, really like is to start blooming now as the orientals are finishing up.
Of course, Lilium speciosum is an oriental lily. It, and any of its selections or varieties (like 'Uchida', 'Late Pink', 'Summers End' and variety rubrum) will bloom later, simply because it is the nature of this oriental species to bloom later than most other orientals.
Also Lilium philippinense, very closely related to formosanum (and difficult to differentiate from) will bloom after orientals. Philipinense, now that I think of it, might not bloom taller than oriental, but formosanum certainly will.
My Summer's End started blooming a week ago and Late Pink has finished. I am sure the heat egged it on.
Right now I have still blooming Scheherazade, Arabesque and other OTs that are similar. They are tall though, in spite of my refusal to water all summer.
Try keeping an eye out as to lilies blooming now in other gardens. That might help if you can then find out the name.
