Virus ?

Ripon, WI(Zone 4a)

Just wondering if you think this one has a virus. This is Rio Negro. With all our strange weather, I'm not sure.

Showing more of the entire plant. I'd like to get it out of the garden if its virused.

If that were in my garden I would toss it. The color looks broken and I think if you have a lot of lilies, it is better to be safe than sorry. Others may disagree, but I was recently reading that if you have a doubt about it, that it is safer for the other lilies to just get it out. You could always move it very far away and see what it looks like this year. Since Rio Negro/ Convara can be easily found, it would make the decision easier in my mind too.

I have had a handful of virus this year. Some of lilies that I have had for many years, one I just brought in. There was no doubt in each case of what I had to do. I have very good aphid control, but in earlier years I did not.

Thanks for the response. I will go dig it up right now. I agree - no sense in taking any chances. This is the 3rd case I've found this year, and all of them were several years old too.

I was just wondering the same thing about my 'Princess Melissa' she looks sick too. :(

Magnolialover, what are you doing to have very good aphid control? I hose'em off wherever I find them, and spray with soaps and neem and whatever I can find. But in a garden as large as yours, what's your secret?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

There is no real secret. This once organic mama has now gone chemical. I think I have to many to take any chances, and even then I lose a few each year anyway. I have taken Lisa's (Buggy Crazy) advice and used Marathon. It works well and lasts a long time. I just feel guilty about it at times. I don't use on on any of my edibles, so I still have aphids on some of my tomatoes and things, but not on lilies, at least not that I have seen.

I love those lilies, but will forever feel guilty about the chemicals. That said, I have had a test patch with Neem Oil where I have gotten fairly good coverage, just not as good as I have with Marathon. I get good points for trying, don't I?

Garden clean up and disinfecting the tool is another big one.

Pixie, I think yours is weather related.

Agree with Mainiac about your flowers, pixie.

Am also not sold a virus is in goldfinch's, just not sure. But if it were me, I would rogue it out too, just in case. So in my opinion, you did the right thing.

Thank you Leftwood! Most of my lilies looks terrible this year due to the weather. We've had one of the rainy seasons on record . Guess what woke me up last night? Downpours!! Sounded like there might be hail with it it was hitting the AC so hard it woke me up. No damage to the lilies that I can see this morning.

To my untrained eye I don't know what I am suppose to be looking at that tells me it is a virus. Can someone please tell me ?

My BIGGEST problem are the Jap.Lily beetles. Some of my trumpets were eaten to the bone.

Is it Japanese beetles or the Red Lily beetle. See photos. This is the Red Lily Beetle

Thanks Mainiac,
It is definately the RED lily beetle,I first collected them in jars of hot water and I thought I did a good job but my Altari and Triumphator and others suffered quite a bit even then. But THEN I was gone a few days and my yellow trumpet (have to look up the name ) was eaten to just "sticks" left. What is the best solution for next year ?

Japanes beetles are unfortunately well known to me because I grown alot of roses. With these I found that handpicking is the best. Also I drop them into a jar of hot water to kill them right away.
