Found in home: Northern California near coast, late July 2009. On carpet, likely came out at night. Seems to be a crawler, didn't jump when prodded. Body is about 1-1/4". Antennae spread about 1-5/8".
CLOSED: what is this cricket-like bug?
This is a relative of grasshoppers and crickets (order Orthoptera) called a Jerusalem cricket among many other common names. It belongs to the family Stenopelmatidae, and several species occur in the western USA - see http://tinyurl.com/mnotmt for a California example.
Thanks suunto. That was a spot-on ID.
