Cut YEWS down will they come back????

Wauseon, OH(Zone 5a)

I cut my YEWS down to about 6 to 8 inches from the ground, I would like to know if they will come back? I am hoping that they will come back and will be much fuller than they were before.

Please gave me your input on this.

My experience with yews is that if you cut too much off at one time, they probably will not have the energy to grow out fast enough especially if they were very old and woody.

I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear, but late July does not give them much time to grow since they would normally be slowing their growth for winter before too long.

They should do. Yews are one of the few conifers that will coppice well.

If you had cut them way back earlier in the spring, they would have had a great chance to sprout out and grow new growth. This late, I agree with NM-gardener-guy. I've cut 8' yews back to one foot in April and they look just great by the fall. I knew one gardener who did this in August and lost the whole bunch. BUT, yews are tough and just might sprout out for you in the spring, especially if there was some green growth left on the stubs after cutting them way back. Do you see any signs of new buds? Yews have many "dormant" buds just waiting to grow. Good luck.

I cut them back to make new growth and I did it last year around this time and those came back and it was dry and hot last summer. This summer has had allot of rain and cool at nights and around 80 in the day. Hope that everything will take place this year yet.

Sounds like you've got a good chance for success. Let us know how it turns out!
