OH OH... it was a tie... after all... the 5 AM judging team out without their headlights..missed it
the same evening I also got a bloom from another seedling... Miss Calie x Daydreams..one of Brendas crosses from a year or so ago.. but from seed... in the spring..growing to flower at the end of July... here she is...
OK...not the best of her... and I plead guilty for contributing to flower abuse... getting my favorite morning glory to bloom and climb all over her.. it's difficult to restrain a favorite..

here's the Arborea seedling.. co - first to flower...it's ....such a wonderful plant..
growing up tall... I believe it has every leaf that ever came on the plant... I don't know why it's not winning other awards... not a hint of yellowing ..fast to flower... pure white ..all be it smaller ... un aromatic flowers.. [ well I guess that settles it right there ]

The colour of the cross is nice.. I love how you have mgs growing with... I am waiting for the two brug seedlings you sent me to grow out of "teenhood" one u sent was a true arborea and the other a cross with axel rose...they are both looking very healthy.. the tendrils on the arborea are really long on yours.. I like that.!
Debra

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Congrats to winners, both are very pretty, and I love that MG that is growing up the cross. I’ve got a couple plants here from last season with buds but now flowers yet. As for the cuttings from last fall, Gordon’s best NOID is growing leaps and bounds over all the others. I hope I can get her to flower before the season is over.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Angel Girl.. yes... theArboreabloomsaredifferent..and are nice enough... I'm awaiting perhaps100 of them open at once.. when the plant gets a bit bigger in the fall.. the blooms do seem to last a good while.
Debra.. yes the Arborea blooms are nice..a bit like stars at night.. here's a better picture of the blooms ..small.. but the bloom size relative to tendral size is pleasing

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Donna... well HI there Girl.. how are you doing there... we worry about you ... I surely hope you are feeling better there.. Get yourself strong.. and get Linda to yourselves down for a visit .. it's going to be WAY over the top in a month or so.. we'll have a number of 20' hedges ...all Brugs... all in flower by then..and a few Brug Islands.. [ groupings ] flowering.. .. one island had .. My Best NOID flowering today..but only two blooms right now... more on the way... from last fall...I kept an 8' standard. of it.. Standards seem like they are slower to display than shorter grown ones .. although there is a tuft at the bottom now for this falls cuttings this is what yours will look like.. when it gives up some flowers..

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Thelast picture there.. of ...MY Best NOID ....it looks a bit funny.. photographed from below.. as no tendrals are seen.. here's abetter shot of them..a recurved bloom.. with the tendrals curled around.. like a handlebar mustache..
it actually is...and shows a darker color... without the sun shinning through the flower
My Best NOID....
I was trying to recreate just who it was ... I don't think it's Superspot.. as there was a dead one in it's pot.. butthere were seedling crosses of it.. not not around.. or any other seedlings which might have lost tags..
but it will be your flower... and to any one else who got a cutting with that.. my given / working name..

Gordon she is just gorgeous, I can’t wait to see the blooms, she hasn’t Y’ed just yet but hopefully soon. I was a little late this spring getting them all out and situated and then some of the cutting stayed in their little 6” pots longer than they should have. They are all doing well now between 2 to 4’ tall and need bigger pots again. I’m doing okay, I just had a sinus surgery done, and it went well. I can’t promise a visit as I’ll be re-cooping from this for a bit longer but you know I’d love to get there.

{{{{{{{Donna}}}}}}} long time no see so glad to see you get well soon!

Gordon, congratulations on your two winning Brugs. Kell's arborea is gorgeous and your Best NOID has a breath taking color. Keep the photos coming as the other Brugs bloom.

Gordon, all the photos are gorgeous.Yes,she does look like a star. She is a keeper, can't wait until you get alot of blooms on her.So keep us posted with the blooms.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Thanks Debra, good to see you to, I'm doing better now.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

I'll get together pictures of my other Arboreas also.. I have one starting to bloom like mine is.... on the roof of the Chelsea Hotel ..and another is growing in my neighborhood park..they gave me space for three brugs.. behind the fence.. down the third base line .. between home and third .. it's planted in the ground....it's not blooming yet...

Coushatta, LA

Cool,can't wait too see them.

Gordan, that is the most beautiful NOID I have ever seen.

I was thinking the same thing Brenda !

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Gordon. I just saw this thread. I was googling about brugs, specificaly sangs, vulcanicolas and arboreas and up came this thread. Round about way to find it, LOL!

So my seeds are already blooming? Geez, mine that I started just before yours I think, are still in 16 oz red plastic cups. I so suck at pushing them. I am just now finished potting 1 gallon seedlings germinated in 2004, 2005 and 2006 up to 5 gallon pots. LOL So true! 1 that was from 2004 was in a red plastic cup and had survived all these years in only the 1 cup. Unbelievable.

Anyway, my Arborea seedlings are so far from flowering, I am so impressed yours are!! In what less than 5 months?. Though all of mine have side branches which is so odd on 8 inch plants. No other seedlings have ever done that before.

Anyway, the only reason I wanted to comment was in your second post you said " un aromatic flowers".

Are you saying your Arborea has no fragrance? Impossible! Arboreas have the best fragrance of all brugs. Those seeds were self pollinated so they should smell just like the Mom I would think.

Did your sang seedlings make it too?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

HI Kell.. yes.. And thanks again for getting me the lovely seeds from your plant.. both the ones marked new and old all did equally well in sprouting out..all are about 3-5 ' now.. depending on how when where they were planted out..the one in the park.. along the third base line planted in the ground.. in apartial shade sometimes... is next to the smallest..
one in a small pot in a shadey area on the sidewalk is the smallest .. the others in pots or contaners in full sune are all flowering.. a few flowers every night for a month or so.. quite cooperative... soon it willl have the strength to put out a full flush of 50 blooms open together... I imagine.. these were planted in March I believe..
Yes... they do smell now... someone said they have the aroma of baked cookies.. or bread.. they were not far off..
MMM My Sangs... well there were three .. two grown from one batch of seeds..did great..they shot straight up to about 3-4 ft.. both were in a 18x18 x 12" tall planter. big leaves all along the stalk... with a furry mass of smaller leaves along the stalk.. these got the same food as each other. and all of the other brugs.. and the same spraying for bugs and pests.. after such a pest spraying... one of these lost all of the big leaves.. andslowly all of the smaller ones also.. I thought surely it would rebound... but every day for weeks it's looking more terrible.. now the pit and the newest leaves there are wilted and the top is limped over... I guess I have to have the ME in and have it pronounced dead... the other is jus fine.. both were in full sun.. the other hasshown no signs of discomfort from the spray that morning.. although some of the bigger leaves have dropped off from the bottom.. do sangs have to " Y " before they flower also.. the smaller side leaves.. are developing to some side branching... but no " Y " for it yet.. we'll include afew picture of it here and on another post.. of them both.. in better times for one... a few weeks ago.. before my camera died in sympathy for the brug Iimagine.. or because left it out in the rain.. it has a new board... but I've yet to get it to have all of it's settiings set so it will photograph right.. so no photos with in the last three weeks..
the third Sang.. bought as a small plant online was always just about to die... from the day it arrived... is now actually growing and looking healthy.. all be it at about only 12 " tall now
can't believe your Arboreas are so small and not flowering yet.. and from so long ago... I'm not pushing mine .. just over feeding .. and providng exotic hormones from around the world..and starting out everything in a mound of decomposed and dehydrated cow manure.. that's my major SECRET.. and an old Delta family tradition..
here's a few sang photos..first the drooping sang now... I keep expecting it to stiffen up and have the few close leaves not drooping out yet... to bring it back..

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Oh... here's the other Sang... both looked the same...before the other one got the droops.. after getting sprayed or whatever prommpted it's failure.. OH It has a " Y " ....I guess i didn't have that question at all.. the question I was meaning to ask ... Was does the irregular leaf structure off the stem.. that usually denotes it going into a flowering stage happen with Sangs also ..or just other brugs.. the Sang definately has a " Y " and is still looking great... still growing..

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

so.. a picture looking tward the front of the roof...

Thumbnail by GordonHawk
Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

and a picture with the skyline included... perhaps my most asked about view..... so the droopy sang is here .. before the droop... at about 2 o'clock... just behing the blue blooming duranta... just below where the higher bamboo trellis starts... looking pretty healthy there.. at least strong and not drooping.. I know it's in the distance... but it was doing great before it wasn't..

Gordon,
I'm so glad someone's arboreas are growing well. Nine of the ten seeds germinated and were 1' tall and healthy when the grasshoppers descended. All nine were chewed down to ground level. Then what was left turned yellow and brown and shriveled. Seedlings were among the first Brugs the grasshoppers went after.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Gordon I have a picture for you.. you sent me some seeds.. Axel Rose X'd with someone ( too tired to get the tag) grown from the seed you sent, and the coleus I grew from seed as well.. thanks so much can't wait to see it..can you remember the name of the Morning Glory you sent me?

Gordon, do you have grass on your roof top garden? Does that mean you have to mow the roof? I don't even have grass. We are all paths and flower beds.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That so sucks you left your camera out in the rain Gordon. Sounds like a Kelley move for sure.

I really can't remember if sangs Y or get sub-equal leaves. I bet they do. I tossed all my sangs out several years ago though I am about to restock. Here sangs get to be the size of cars. They do not die back in the winter for they like the cool weather.

Your view is just so spectacular. I would love to sit there with you chatting plants and have a tall cool one.

Veronica, what a sad story. Brug seedlings as grasshopper dinner. So much prep time for a fast dinner on the go for sure. I just was out and saw a just rotted seed pod so I can sure send you more so fresh seeds if you want to try, try again. I probably will have enough for another person if anyone wants to try an Arborea.

I just looked at your last pic again Gordon. That is what dreams are made of! Are you in Manhattan? My son is in Manhattan. He is here this week so I am in heaven. Last year, he was living on the 58th floor of the Epic Building and he too had views from all his windows that were truly amazing.

Veronica new seeds.

I have a lot of pods still on.

Thumbnail by Kell
La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Kell, I was heartsick, but yes, yes, yes, I do want to try again. I don't care what I have to move inside the house, but I'm setting up an area for seedlings to get a safer head start. Damage has eased off since I went into the green and shadehouse with some sort of Ortho product that was safe to use on fruit trees. I have some small citrus and pomegranate plants in there also. I'll have to purchase a hazmat suit to rival Liz's to apply that Ortho product as often as it takes to keep those grasshoppers off my plants and start early next year.

I've lost Brugs to grasshoppers in years past, but this has been an exceptionally expensive year as well. I'm afraid to add up my losses, but it includes Brugs I purchased this from Gary, Liz and one of Brenda's. I finally had 2 of the Brugs I've had on my list ever since I first saw them — arborea and Rothkirch — and they fall victim these eating machines!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is such a shame. I am so happy I do not have grasshoppers. Mostly I just get mites though I found a new cure. 1 spray and they are gone for months. Of course I just started fertilizing them a lot and it is all that new soft green growth that invites mites to come so I may be singing another tune next month.

I wish I could give you a piece of my RK too but it is hard to root. In the past I only had luck in the spring so I missed my best chance. I have a list of friends who want it. I have a 10 foot tree of it but with only a small canopy due to years of abuse. It actually died and came back from the roots. It got so tall because it was under my roog overhang on the side of the house and was stretching to the sun. It has not been repotted for 4 years. I have been such a bad brug mom for sure. I noticed today it has some new blooms. Way too pretty to let die again!

Today I went to visit my 2 seed pods on a sang or X flava. I am not sure which it is. I have been reading Preissels' book trying it figure it out. Probably a sang hybrid but it self pollinates and the flowers are not as pendant as a sangs are plus they flare more. The leaves are very shiny too. The calyx is a sang's too with all the splits, along with staying green and clinging to the growing seed pod. It is at a friend's house and she is letting me have the seedpods. When and if I get them, if you want you can get a few of these seeds too.

Thumbnail by Kell
La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Kell, your offer of those sang or X flava seeds is awfully tempting, but unless a miracle happened, they wouldn't survive through the heat here in central Texas. I've had great success getting sang seedlings up to about 18" before mid May. Then they die. Once I was able to keep one seedling alive through the early part of fall before it died, too. I haven't kept track of the number of days over 100ºF, but nearby Austin has had over 55 - +100ºF days. It doesn't get as hot here, but we've had our share of +100)F days. I've had to accept that the only way I can enjoy sangs is by looking at photos. I became interest in Brugs because I fell in love with sangs.

I know Rothkirch is difficult to root. That is why I felt so lucky at having won that auction. Maybe some day, I'll get another chance at one. I'm glad yours came back. I'm still amazed when a Brug given up for dead returns. I've had a few return.

Living out amongst the grasshoppers has a few advantages. I seldom have mite problems, the caterpillars aren't too bad and it's too dry for slugs and snails. I do encounter some unusual pests though. I went out to water my plants late this afternoon and found a number of potted Brugs had been knocked over or upended. I think they'll all survive the damage. We raise our replacement heifers in the pasture nearest the house. An electric fence surrounds the yard and is supposed to keep them out, but one clever little girl has discovered that the fence doesn't work very well when the soil is too dry. She's been coming under the fence everyday for a week now to eat the Bermuda grass growing around my fruit trees. Sometimes we forget to close the gate and a few let themselves in, but they have never bothered the plants in the shadehouse. She was probably attracted to the strands of grass growing inside it because of the moisture. My DH gets home tomorrow. He'll need to string at least another hot wire, replace the solar battery and water the posts.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

awww, poor cows.. I know how they like sweet green grass.. I remember when we lived on a farm, ours used to come into the farm yard to the storm cellar and chew on the grass there.. especially in the heat of a dry summer and the fields were burned up..hope her back isn't too scratched up from the barbs..

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

The electric fence is made of a smooth wire so no barbs. The soil is so dry that electricity is not conducted along it anymore, but the rest aren't aware of it yet. I tend to think of them as pets so they are still in excellent condition. I was able to find some old hay to use as filler, but they also get some alfalfa, liquid feed which contains proteins and minerals and when my DH is home some range cubes as treats. Right now, catttle and horses are an expensive hobby, because we sure don't make any money when we have to buy hay and supplements. Just trying to hang on, hoping the drought is over soon and the grass comes back before winter. We'll lose a lot of money if we have to sell the cattle. The prices are very low because so many ranchers can't afford to feed them or can't find the hay. It took me weeks to find the old stuff I bought and I paid premium prices for it. Truckers are charging over $3.00 a mile to deliver the hay making delivery cost more than the hay does.

Hi Kell !

Hugs my friend..

Elva

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Gordon, Kell's star-shaped Arborea is breathtaking! It would be a beauty in a moon garden with those white stars shimmering.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hello Elva! Every time I look at the Ruthie and the Fleming Island Rachel I have for you which BTW both so needs to be repotted, I think of you. I hope you are doing well.

Canngirl, best about Arborea is the scent. I think it is the best smell ever. About 5 PM it starts and my whole yard reeks.

Sadly, my arborea is way too tall and goes up thru a canopy of other plants to get sun so I rarely get to see the flowers anymore. Tonight I noticed a new shoot that is short blooming.

Thumbnail by Kell
San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Veronica, I hope you get rain fast. That sounds terrible.

My son has been here from NYC all week so I got sidetracked. It looks like no one else wants the Arborea seeds so how many do you want? Pods are falling like crazy from way up and for a change I am grabbing them before the animals get them. I am about to wash and clean them all and then send them off to The Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco. Their Arborea is a hybrid - not self pollinating so they wanted my seeds.

Send me your address again please.

Thumbnail by Kell
La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Kell,

I sent my address via D-mail. :-)

Rain chances hover around 10 - 20% and of course, they don't materialize. About 1/3 of the state is now in an exceptional drought. We received a 1/4" a few days ago, barely enough to keep the dust down for a few hours. It's horrible when those of us who live inland get excited about the possibility of a hurricane, but that hope evaporated as well. There was mention of an El Nino forming in the Pacific which usually means higher than average rainfall for us, but I haven't heard anything about it lately.

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Kell, I would love to try some of your seeds. Please see if I have anything you'd like in trade.
