just starting to try out seed germination i currently have some cordyline australis seeds from Nzealand
can anyone give advice on best practice/advice on how to go about this
any help greatly appreciated

I'm afraid from the looks of things, you didn't pick an easy seed to start with. This is what Thompson and Morgan suggests:

Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 25-27C (75-80F). Soak in lukewarm water for 1-2 hours before sowing in well drained compost.

Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Pot on as required into 13cm (5in) and finally 20cm (8in) pots.

Water moderately through the spring and summer and provide a temperature of 7-13C (45-57F) throughout the winter, and reduce the watering accordingly.

If you don't have a heat mat, that might be helpful to keep the seeds at that temp, unless you have someplace that maintains that kind of temperature, day and night. I have a friend who germinates everything on top of her refrigerator.

The other thing you'll need to make sure of is that the planting medium never dries out (not that you want it dripping wet, either).
