I'm working on putting a new E-mail alert feature into these forums. Here's how I see it working:

A reader goes to a thread. They find a thread they are interested in, and they click on 'Watch this thread'. Then, everytime someone posts something new to that thread, E-mail is sent to you with a note about the new post.

Also - in the preferences for your user account, you will be able to customize how you want the E-mail alerts to appear. They can be sent in plain text, or perhaps we can do a nice HTML page sent by E-mail (I know how to do this). Furthermore, you might want the entire contents of the new post to appear in your mailbox, or simply choose to get just the subject and name, with a direct link to the message.

I hope I haven't unnecessarily complicated this - just trying to explain myself. I'll probably get this finished tomorrow morning - it depends on how busy I get with other work.

If anybody has any suggestions to make about the way this will work - let me know. I want it to be easy and simple for the user, since it's a feature that will probably be used a lot, and needs to be quick and easy to use.

After it's implemented, we can, of course, continue to change and improve on how it works.

I got lost in your explanation of it, but that's okay. We (I speak for me, myself and I) don't need to know how it works at first. How about just giving it a try and see what happens? We'll just follow directions.

Okay, I have a "beta" version ready for testing. At the top of each thread, you'll see a button that says "Watch this thread".

Click that. You will then be watching the thread. Whenever a new post is made to that thread, a mail will be sent to you with to alert you. I've tested it and it seems to work quite well!! It might break throughout the day as I continue working on it, but give it a try!
