I seem to have done better with the cottage garden look for the left side of the front yard than the right.
These pictures were from taken accross the street so I could get the entire view of each side in.
Cottage Garden Look in the Front Yard
Front yard left. Lots of daylilies, a row of oriental lilies going partially accross blooming now and all the zinnias in back which are harder to see because of those lilies being tall in front of them. A row of shrubs in back of everything and a butterfly bush there at the end. In back of that shrub row is my pond.
Front yard right. Much more terraced. Floribundaville rose bed on far right. Shrub rose section on left top. Daylilies on top section between. There is a trellis with honeysuckle there showing in the picture. Raised planterbox running in front with new daylilies and lilies planted this year. Not much is showing in planterbox though as plantings are pretty new
I have actually been working on the right side much longer than the left side. Left side I only started last year and I am amazed that it already looks as good as it does.
The right side actually looks very good. When the roses are in bloom it stops traffic. The newest thing there is the planterbox, which is the terraced bed right in back of the stacked stone wall. Had that done last fall and planted it with daylilies and bulb lilies this spring. But because the lilies and daylilies are so new, I am not getting the mass effect of bloom that I envision. I am sure all that will change next year.
Very pretty NYR. Your place is amazing.
Awesome landscape, Rita - what a beautiful entrance to the front of your home! I had seen many of your back yard views but was eagerly anticipating to see what the front looks like....thanks for sharing! Gorgeous.
I really need to replace the complete front yard walkway and front steps. But I don't know when I will get to it. Too big a project for me to think about for now. But once I get that done, it will be the last step in making the front look really great. But its just gonna have to wait. Meanwhile, I hope the gardens make it pretty enough that people don't notice the crooked steps and walkway. But I sure do notice it every time I go out in the front yard.
I want to add some more lilies to the left side, the street section on the right is done. It does have lilies further back from that shrub row section and lilies in the very back right corner on top of Floribundaville roses. But that section of lilies is done.
Rita, trust me, it's not noticeable. And even if it were, I like a few oddities/quirks - it's called character! You don't want everything to be TOO perfect, do you? LOL. You have done an outstanding job and your house and garden are both beautiful.
Rita, I knew it would be fantastic and it is!! I'm with Steve, I never noticed the steps, there are too many beautiful gardens to be concerned with the steps. :) LOL Keep the pictures coming girl! :)
Thanks, everyone for the compliments. I have a older Craftsman style house and have been working on the gardens here for years. The steps in front and the driveway both need redoing but neither is going to get done anytime soon as those two expensive projects are not in the budget. I spent money on the hardscape for the garden beds first as I know I needed those done in order to plant my gardens.
One has to have their priorities, Rita. I see you have your priorities in the correct order. :) LOL Gardens make the property, not steps or driveways. :)
My view exactly!
Rita, it's really nice, even the flat stone wall. I hope you have a lot of foot traffic to enjoy as well. The gardens go well with the style of the home. No one has a clue how much work was and is still involved. Even for low maintenance flowers (there aren't many), there is no end to the daily inspection. Wear it with great pride.
Have you had any beetle problems this year (japanese and lily)?
Actually, we have an excessive amount of foot traffic because of the park accross the street. Anyone who just feels like taking a walk will most likely come this way plus the dog walkers all come this way. I know all the dog walkers by now, they all stop and chat for a minute when I am out front.
No Beetles here knock on wood!
