I don't think I'm sleeping tonight after seeing this thing? looks like a spider with armor. He rears up and front two legs come up when he feels threatened. And he's huge!

This appears to be a male folding door trapdoor spider, Antrodiaetus unicolor (family Antrodiaetidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/nxg3bg for an image. Males often will wander some distance from their burrow in search for a mate. They have very poor eyesight, and what you observed was a very typical response to a potential threat .

thanks Suunto. Can you believe I just found another one walking across my front yard? I showed my DH and his response was "look at those fangs!"
