July Gessie pictures, part 3

The other July threads were getting long, so I thought I'd start a new one.

Sinningia 'Colorado Sunset'

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia 'Ruffled Wood Nymph' Of every single plant I grow, this one is probably my very favorite. It always has so many blooms on it! Tiny little plant just covered in blooms! The only bad thing is that I have never been able to get it to set seeds. I've read somewhere that it's most likely sterile, or very near it. I'd love to be able to hybridize with it because of its floriferousness (is that a word? LOL). I'll have to look closer to see if it has pollen I could use on another flower...

Sinningia 'Scoundrel' x self I like the bright color of this one.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

This is tagged as Sinningia 'Heartland's Double Dilly' but it doesn't have the little "flippy petal" in the middle to make it a double. I do wonder if it was mislabeled. Do any of you recognize it as something else? It's lovely either way. :o)

Oh, and that's Sinn. Danielle over to the right.

Edited to add: This is NOT Sinn. 'Heartland's Double Dilly". It IS Sinn 'Los Angeles'. The tags were swapped. Makes me so mad. LOL

And finally, this was labeled Sinn. ? LOL So, do any of you recognize it? Bonnie, Gail, Jan, Brenda (where are you, girl???), this came in the box from Gary last year. Does it match any of the named ones y'all got from him? It's a cute little thing!

Very pretty! And nicely grown--I love the pink ones!

Rain, love those photos. I do remember having Colorado Sunset and thought she was my favorite sinningia at the time.

Let me see if I can find a picture of her......don't think mine was as pretty as yours is.

looks like maybe appollo, think there is 1 on ebay right now.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It was just my old camera, Bonnie, because I sent that one pictured to RainGazer^_^

Isn't 'Colorado Sunset' awesome?? I was going to tell you it's the one you sent me last year, Gail! LOL I think pretty much every one you sent me is growing and doing very well. You should see 'Aurora Borealis'! I'll have to take a picture. It's not blooming yet, but it has buds and is just huge! I've got it under 4 tubes, but it's a little saggy, as if all the leaves are just too heavy for it to hold up. Nice variegation on it, too!

Bonnie, that pink one might be 'Apollo' but I'm not convinced. Looks like the bloom on mine is darker and has more and darker pink in the throat. The bloom above has faded away, but there are several more buds, so when they open I'll get better pictures of it and maybe that will help figure it out for sure. You may be right, though!

Gail, I LOVE those Sinns!!! How big were they when they first arrived? You said they were blooming or had buds, right? I want some of those so bad, but then I think I should just grow them from seed so it's cheaper. But I want some of those blooms NOW! LOL Knowing you like I do, I'm sure you're propagating them like crazy, but I'm gonna ask anyway. Are you? If so, put my name on them and I'll trade you for them or just buy them from you! Are they scented? If so, I think I'm gonna pass out. I know some of the Sinns like that are, but you haven't mentioned those being scented, so I'm expecting that they aren't.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

These are sinningias (florist's gloxinia) hybridized by David Thompson. They have been real pricey but as time goes on, they are costing less and less on ebay. You can't get these by seed without a cutting or tuber.........I am growing some by cuttings.

By the way........remember our discussion about planting leaves? I wrote David and ask him if the tubers formed would put out new growth in time. He assured me that they would, so I have currently 6 leaves down but it will take months to form a tuber. Also.........when all of these quit blooming, I can again take the centers to root.
Then, take all the leaves off except the bottom row and stick them also like the other 6 leaves.........
He sends them really big and covered in buds..........so you know you have a nice size tuber going.

Just remember that he calls this size he is sending out 'babies'..........he told me to just wait and see a mature one in bloom...........can't wait for these to bloom a second or third time..............

I don't have a good nose but haven't checked to see if they are scented. I wouldn't think so, Rain. I bought all he offered in the beginning so I have a lot of propagating to do to even get back half of what I paid for them..............but will be happy to share once I reach that point..........

Hmmm... I may experience a moment of weakness and not be able to wait. LOL They are really gorgeous! I knew those couldn't be grown from seed, but some of the hybrids could, just wouldn't be named. I had lost all my Gessie seeds, but I found them. I am hoping I still have some Charles Lawn hybrid seeds left. Can't remember if I sowed them all or not. He has some really spectacular ones, but it would be a crap shoot to see if any from seed looked as good as some of the ones I've seen pics of. http://www.gesneriads.ca/sinni189.htm

I have a few first-time-ever blooms today, as well as some that haven't bloomed in a year or so, so they've been sorely missed! Thought I'd share some of them.

Sinningia 'Los Angeles'

Edited to add: This is NOT Sinn 'Los Angeles'. It IS Sinn 'Heartland's Double Dilly'. Tags were swapped. :oP

Streptocarpus 'Snow Rose' This is the most gorgeous flower!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Streptocarous 'Rose Scentsation' It just opened this morning, so it isn't even fully open and isn't fragrant yet, but it will be soon. I can't wait! I think it's a beautiful flower! When I ordered this one last year, in the same order was also 'Jaco's Gem' which I have desperately wanted for ages! Well, imagine my surprise when this was 'Jaco's' bloom! LOL The tags were swapped, I guess. I'm now waiting to see if the one with a bud is really 'Jaco's Gem'. I hope so!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia 'Danielle' Big blooms!

Edited to add: This is NOT Sinn 'Danielle' Haven't figured out yet what it is. I got a couple batches of Sinns with all the tags mixed up. For the most part, there is a matching plant to each name tag that came in the boxes, but several of the tags were with the wrong plants. I'm just now getting them all to bloom so I can figure out what's what. I can't figure this one out, though. 'Glory Be' was suggested, but I can't decide if this is it or not.

Sinningia 'Martha Lemke' It's a tiny little plant, but it loves to bloom!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

AV 'Startrick' but this isn't what it's supposed to look like. http://www.robsviolet.com/strartrick.htm If it doesn't start blooming right, it's outta here.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

And a few not-yet-blooming, but still fabulous Sinningias. I love beautiful foliage, too!

You all know my weakness for fuzzy plants! Sinningia araneosa

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia araneosa again, but this time from the top.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia leucotricha
I grew all these species Sinns from seed. If you've never tried it, you should. It's very rewarding!

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Sinningia speciosa 'Cardoso Moreira' Not so fuzzy, but a gorgeous pattern on the leaves.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

Eucodonia 'Tiny Tot' I didn't grow this from seed, but love the fuzziness!

Rain, wow at your pics. Did you get a fancy pancy new camera? They are great! I especially love sinningia speciosa 'Cardoso Moreira'.

Thanks, Gail! Nope, no new camera. I'm just learning to use mine properly after having it for a year and a half. LOL I really, really want a fancy DSLR. A guy at church has one and I'm always tempted to just grab it and run, but I'm pretty sure that's not proper church behavior! LOL Maybe one day I'll get one...

You should have 'Cardoso Moreira' or at least did at one point. It came from all those seeds we grew. I've probably got another tuber of it somewhere around here if you want it.
