Eradicate! Eradicate!

Birmingham, United Kingdom

This is one pest that I just can't seem to eradicate...the dreaded SLUG (!) I found a pair of them on my flying saucers. No matter how much I try I just can't seem to eradicate them but I am slowly getting there. Here is one with it's little horns looking up at me like a sly little devil wondering how he can get my morning glories. The usual slug killer does not seem to work, I think there is a nest of them hiding ready to swarm, as soon as the first one goes the other ones take up position. I am trying to go organic so I might have to take up hunting these slugs until I get them all and rub some salt into them until they have enough and froth up and wither away. I am sure they have there purpose but these are the most ugly little slimy creatures you can come across that slither everywhere, you can tell where they have been though by the trail of slime they leave. If they had the chance these little vile greedy devils would eat everything they could get there little greedy mouths on and still come back looking for more and more until they are ready to explode, I could only wish!

Have you tried putting traps? I've heard bury cans or small dishes flush with some beer in it into the ground. I may have the same problem once I am back in Germany because there are tons of snails in my parents' garden. I didn't know they ate MGs, here in Morocco I had a huge problem with spider mite. So it's out of the frying pan into the fire; I suppose...

Can you have ducks where you are? We used to have ducks, and when we did, we didn't have any slugs around.

Also, find out where the slugs lay their eggs, and how often. If I don't know the specie, I don't think I can help much. To find a chink in their armor, you need to know the specie and its life cycle.

We have here a slug that gets 4" long, and is the color of rust. They lay large eggs, under clutter that lies flat on the ground protecting them.
Lumber scraps, old pots, etc.

Years ago I would bring home from fishing the trash fish, to feed the cats. The next morning the often were literally covered with slugs. They were good bait for slugs, so I used the opportunity to skewer the slugs while I could.

We have many slug jokes here, because they seem to proliferate in a maritime climate. "don't stand under a tree while it is raining, the slugs will fall in your hair", and never cut a slug in half while it is raining, because you will wind up with two slugs instead of one.

Slugs will retire to vole, mouse, rat and mole tunnels. When it rains again, they come gushing out of the rodent holes. Frank
