What kind of caterpillar is this?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I wondered what was eating my waterlily. Then I found this guy stranded on a lily pad. I can't imagine that it was a good thing for him to be sitting in the middle of the pond, so I moved him to a penta on land. I hope that i didn't do the wrong thing. Do you know what kind he is?

Thanks!

Not too sure. I found this exact caterpillar on my blood lily (scadoxus multiflorous). I looked it up and the closest thing i could find was a "Lily Moth" or "Lily Caterpillar" but mine (like yours) doesn't have yellow in it? I hope you find out!

I think you're right. I think it's a dark morph of the lily moth. One website that I went to said that spider lilies are their favorite but also showed pictures of them on water lilies. Spider lilies and Blood lilies are in the same family so that makes sense. Another site said that their coloring varies so there you go!

I may have done the wrong thing moving it but then again, I'm pretty sure the birds or the bullfrog would have found it soon enough. The water lily and the pond are just not that big.

yeah, this guy got into my pool screen enclosure somehow and is having a smorgasbord out of my plants! Finally found the little fat guy hiding way down in the leaves.

It does appear to be in the same family (Noctuidae) as the lily caterpillar. Perhaps it is a melanistic individual.
