Can someone verifiy this as pirate spider/Mimetus. They seem to live in the southern part of America, but this one was found in CT. I found it in my bed after it bit me while I was sleeping. It felt like a bee sting and my leg is a little stiff but thats about it. thanks
pirate spider?
It is possible that this could be a pirate spider in the genus Mimetus, but I hesitate to try a confirmation from such a small image. They can occur in some northern areas, see http://tinyurl.com/nu9ogj for a specimen from Massachusetts. Also, I am unaware of any confirmed reports of pirate spiders biting humans. They are so small, that one would think that their fangs might not be able to penetrate human skin. Unless you actually saw it biting, the finding of this spider in your bed may have been coincidental rather than causal.
It bit me all right, I woke instantly and only had 1 bed sheet over me which i removed and saw this spider right by my leg.
