I'm on vacation in Virginia. Mom and I went to Walmart and I found this weird looking HUGE moth on the curb stop as I was helping Mom get something loaded into the trunk. I reached in and got my camera because I've never seen a moth/crawfish looking combination like this. Does anyone know what this is?
The next photo will give you an idea for size comparison to the curb.
CLOSED: Strange looking moth in Luray, VA
It's a (male) Dobsonfly - the larvae live in streams, and are called hellgramites.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I'm glad now that I didn't reach down and touch it.
I'd never seen anything like that before and I knew surely someone here on Dave's would know what it was.

By the way, I really enjoyed reading the Wikipedia link you provided. Thank you.
The BugFiles page could use some more pictures, if you want to put them there:

I added the first photo I had posted. I don't know what the zip code is there in Luray so I didn't add it to the files, but mentioned Luray in my photo description.
Thanks again!
Janet
