These guys have been buzzing around the front of our store in central New Jersey for the last week or so. There is nothing to attract them, just hot cement and a masonry pilar that they land on briefly. They don't seem to be agressive. They just wait til another comes along and then they fly off together- presumably part of the breeding ritual. It measures a little over an inch long.
I'd like to explain to my coworkers what they are, that they won't be around long and that they don't need spraying- that's how I got this one. I've googled all kinds of wasp and hornet pictures and can't seem to find one that matches this body pattern.
Thanks for any help.
Steve

CLOSED: Wasp ID please
This wasp is in the family Scoliidae (hairy flower wasps), likely in the genus Campsomeris. The larvae of these wasps are ectoparasitic on the larvae of scarab beetles. See http://tinyurl.com/nql586 for more detailed information.
What took so long? ;)
Thanks for the response. I'm an avid bird watcher, but not used to figuring out this kind!
