About 2 years ago I was bit by something in eastern Washington while weeding my sister's yard. I did not feel the bite or see what it was that bit me. The site became irritated and red to about a 1-1/2" circumference, no itching, no pain, it crusted over and went away after about 2 weeks. Ever since then, whenever I get insect bites (spider I suspect) in western Washington, they react similarly, although the circumference is only about 1/2". I've never had reactions like this previous to my initial bite (whatever it was). I assume whatever initially bit me left something in my system that now causes this new reaction. Any clues? Oh yeah, I'm generally fairly immune to bugs - e.g., mosquitos bite me but I don't have much of a reaction unless the infestation is heavy.
Thanks. Deb

One possibility is a biting midge in the family Ceratopogonidae. Commonly known as punkies or no-see-ums, they are small enough to pass through ordinary window screening. I get a more severe reaction from their bites than from any other blood-feeding insect that have fed on me.
