I am looking to plant 2 trees and would like a cherry tree of some sort, and possibly a hybrid poplar. Does anyone have any experience with either of these in zone 3/4? What kind of cherry tree would anyone recommend? Do I need 2 cherry trees for them to flower and produce fruit? Has anyone planted one of the hybrid poplars? Any comments on whether or not you like it? Any advice or opinions would really be appreciated! Thanks!
help with tree choices please
Best to get two different cherry cultivars if you want a good crop; some cherries are self-fertile, but even these fruit better if cross-pollinated by a different one. Make sure they are orchard cherries, not the ornamental flowering ones, as a lot of those are sterile and don't have fruit at all.
Poplars - proceed with caution. They get huge, and have invasive roots which can damage foundations, service lines, etc. General recommendation is not to plant them within 30-40 metres of buildings or leach fields, particularly on clay soils. But in a wide open space, they make a nice tree.
