I cam across this monster while fishing up in the mountains of SC. It is approx. 3-4 inches in length. I was thinking that it was possibly a tiger spiketail, but the pattern on the abdomen is wrong. Just curious. I like to know what it is I'm looking at.
CLOSED: Unknown dragonfly
I have been seeing these huge 'dragonflies' also lately and would like to know what they are. I have seen bats chasing them and they look to be close in size to the bats.
ants
I suspect that this is in a different family altogether (Gomphidae); check out the image of a dragonhunter (Hagenius brevistylus) at http://tinyurl.com/n6q9ds - they typically rest on their femurs when the perch.
I think you may be right. I'm calling this one solved
Dinkus, that is a beautiful photograph. May I ask what type of camera you used?
Thanks.
Helen
