i really love this hoya.
Its like Splash, but the leaves are different. They can get a lot of deep red tones in them. This is the bloom.
Chimera in bloom
Oh, that is so nice! I have one called pubicalyx Royal Hawaiian Purple that someone said is also called Chimera ... mine hasn't bloomed yet and I sure hope it's that pretty! Love that bloom!
Are those the same??? I will put that on the tag too. I don;t like to buy duplicates, LOL!
By the way...many pubicalyx cultivars get multicolored corollas, especially when it is hot or the bloom is in alot of sun. It is something to do with the sugars in the corolla moving about. There is no chimera - it was badly named. It is a chimeric effect....
All I know is, the blooms are a lot different than Splash!
I wonder, can bloom color vary with different cultural conditions?
I have three pubicalyx, one received in the 2008 DL order, 'Royal Hawaiian Purple'. The other two were received in trades and one of those was labeled Silver Pink, the other unknown. None of them have bloomed yet, I'm still waiting patiently, LOL.
Geesh ... talk about names! I just found pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57670/ and I see it is also known as Silver Pink, Silver Prince, Silver Knight, Splash, Appaloosa, and Gray Lady! No wonder there's so much confusion, it sure would be easier if they stuck with just one name.
Here's a picture of mine side by side. The foliage on all of them look alike to me, with the exception of 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' which has such pretty dark red coloration on the new leaves. I can't wait to see signs of buds and blooms on mine, whoever they are!
H. pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' was registered as such and all of the other names are 'made' up names by people wanting to sell something 'new'. Same old plant with a new name. Get's 'em every time!!! H. pubicalyx cultivars have been around so long, it is almost certain there are few 'pure' strains left...they have cross pollinated and changed and whoever grows out seedlings puts them on ebay under a sexy new name and .... Well, the rest is history.
The determination of a hoya's id comes from shape of certain (maybe a few) flower parts (shape of corona lobes, pollinium etc.) not by the color of the leaves nor the flowers. Color is the MOST insignificant determining factor...flower and leaf color can change...even in the same environment. The change is generally not radical - like deep red to pale green....but it can change pink/white/red etc.
When you say 'the flowers are different'...does that mean the shape and structure of the flowers, or the color?
Question: Do all the pubicalyx get the dark red tones in the new foliage if given a lot of sun, or is it just the Royal Hawaiian Purple? I've moved my other two to brighter light to see what happens. I'm going to watch for signs of any sunburn though, thinking I might have had one in the sun earlier in the year and the foliage bleached out a bit. With my brain though, I might be thinking of one of the carnosa's.
The only pubicalyxes I know of with the deep red new growth are RHP and Red Buttons. Normally, H. pubicalyx prefers less light to more light -
Thanks Carol ... I probably better move mine to a little lower light. I put them out by the pool where the sun is filtered by the screen but that still might be too much direct sun.
I forgot there was a pubicalyx called Red Buttons but now remember someone posting about it in the past. I really like the looks of the deep red colors of the new leaves!
RHP and Red Buttons are almost identical, and you can only tell the REAL difference when you have each one side by side. RHP has larger leaves. Oh, there is a bit of color difference (but color is not a good indicator) and the RHP has slightly slightly larger flower (you would notice only if you were using calipers!!!). Any excuse to publish!!
They also really like to grow d r y.
wow I water mine daily, they seem to like it a lot
Goth: Mine have been watered daily because of all the rain we've had over this way in Daytona Beach. It's that time of year when we are having the afternoon thunderstorms and lots of rain. My plants dry out quickly though because they are in a very chunky, mostly bark mix, and the water runs right through.
