Does anyone know what this peculiar thing seen on my Butterfly Bush might be?
First I thought it was a moth, then I thought it was a hummingbird. Very odd little guy!

Thanks for your help!

This cute little guy is also called a Sphinx moth (Sphingidae). Unlike a hummingbird which has a tubular beak, the moth has a long nose that unfurls to sip nectar, and coils up when not in use.
Good photo--they are terribly hard to get a good picture of!

Oh thank you so much. We were so very puzzled! Very fun to watch this little guy!

Those things wrapped up our purple verbena last year for just one day. Had never seen them before or since.
