It's got the mouth like a Wheel Bug, just not near as big.

I think its a squash bug.

If it was humming when you saw it, it might be a humbug...

Would jumping around make it a jitter bug, Bolino? Or if it shows up on the door mat, a bug in a rug?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

This is indeed a squash bug (Anasa tristis) - bad, bad, bug! Kill, kill, kill!! See http://tinyurl.com/j2llv for details on its life cycle and control recommendations.

Oh when sally said she thought it was a squash bug, which is what I was afraid of, I got hold to my DH to find out where the bug spray was, and went out and sprayed the dickens out of that squash plant. They've already killed half of it in 2 days and there are eggs all over the leaves. Wonder if the spray will kill the eggs too??

what kind of spray did you use?

I just scrape off the eggs and crush them. You need to patrol the plants on a daily basis, looking for the eggs.

eggs are a patch of little gold or brown balls under a leaf

suunto (aka my hero), I don't think I've ever seen you call a bug bad!! So this guy must really be baaad.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents that you are awesome. Such a help!!

Thanks!

They are really bad!!!!! Look under the leaves for these greyish to beige , dark antennae young ones. Carry a soapy bucket to knock them into to drown.
Amazingly, I haven't seen any yet this year!! They like my gourds as much or more than squash.
