Please help I.D. A female?
Moth I.D. Please.
This is a Royal Walnut Moth (Citheronia regalis); its larva is the hickory horned devil - see http://tinyurl.com/mjrptf
yay Kim. I raised a bunch last year
Thank you for the I.D. Sunnto. Hi Donna, is that a female? I looked for the 'fat' pair of antenaes and didn't see them. I'm getting ready to release it onto my garden outdoor. The link stated that it has a vestigal mouth part (?) so they can nectar like other butterflies?
I'm pretty convinced it's a female. Further reading revealed that it doesn't feed. I brought the whole cage and left the 'door' open. Should a male find her? I may have a chance to collect eggs? I hope so, wish me lucks. ^_^
Its also known as a Regal moth. Oh and but the size of the abdomen yup you got a girl. the males have a smaller skinner abdomen. The Regal moths here in Ohio are a lighter shade but i just love insects.
Kim here is my album on moths if you want to see the life cycle of the Regal moth
