Supposed to be Black Dragon, but what is it?

This was sold to me as Black Dragon, so I'm quite disappointed. Does anyone know what it really is?

I'll try a third time to post pic of the bud. I don't know why it didn't work.

Do you remember where you got it? Maybe they can tell you. Named or un-named it looks like a keeper to me. :)

Ticker, I got it from Old House Gardens. They have a limited selection of lily bulbs (heirlooms only), and I've been through the whole list and this is not on it. I also sent them pics, but mostly for their info, as they offered me a credit or refund or replacement when I called. At least they were very nice about it.

It might be a keeper if I had a lot of space, but I don't, so I'm fussy about what I want, and I want more color. I'll be looking to trade these for others I want more.

Perennially, I think it's Silver Sunburst, which OHG sold a few years ago but no longer offer. I just went out and photographed it but I altered my camera software so the pics aren't downloading. But here's a bad picture from 2007. I'll send closeups when I reload my software. In closeup they're a dead ringer for your lily.

It's a great, indestructible lily but it does spread quite a bit. What you see in the pic was 3 bulbs and I have a lot more now. I have to keep moving them. I sent some to Steve. I could probably send them to several more people without missing a beat. So if you don't have a lot of space and want more color, you might want to trade them away.

For what it's worth, my Black Dragons didn't come up at all, several years back. They were incredibly gracious about replacing them. My Silvers are wonderful - but you should get what you want.

Hey, Perennial, go to lily bloom thread #8. I have a really good closeup of Silver Sunburst in the middle of the thread.

Thanks, Donna. Yours do look just like mine. I wonder how they could have mixed it up if they no longer offer them. Did you get your black dragons from OHG as well? I had to call them about my Hanson's lily that didn't come up. Also wasn't too thrilled that they sent me African Queen instead of the Copper King I ordered, because of crop failure. I'm sure that I said no substitutions. I didn't ask for a refund on those, though. At least they were very gracious about it and are sending me another Hanson's this fall - and a refund on the possibly silver sunbursts. Still, the only part of my order that turned out as it should be was the Red Velvets.

Thanks, Donna. We cross-posted. Yours seem to have more pink on the outside of the bud, but I suppose that could just be from different soil. I'll bet that's what I have, because it's probably from the same grower, who's probably who mixed it up.

Wow, what a disapointing experience. I never got my Black Dragons. I sent an email that got lost, and then raised the issue a few months later and it was handled well. By that time I had regale and Longidragon and decided that I was becoming too one note.

I think that sometimes people just slip up, and don't realize what they have. I ordered four Festiva Maximas from a company that sent me 1 FM, 1 Lady Alexandra Duff, one Kansas and one Ann Cousins. I originally ordered three because they said that FM was so strong that they unexpectedly had a bumper crop of them, so they were offering THREE for $19.95. I think they really thought they were shipping me three FM.

One year I ordered 3 lilium Martagon and 3 lilum Martagon album from OHG and they could not provide the albums. I believe I got a credit plus 10% (nice). They did not substitute. It is only right that they give you a credit or refund for the Sunbursts.

I think it's tough to be a small company. I agree with you that their lily selection is limited, and they have a lot of orange and yellow lilies, which don't match my color scheme. They had Golden Sunburst a couple of years ago. And because of the nature of their business they are obliged to charge a significant premium for lilies that are easy to obtain elsewhere, like regale.

It's a drag for you (I'm always rooting for people in the lily leaf beetle zone) but they'll make it right.

Thanks for rooting for us poor souls in the lily beetle zone! It's definitely a tough job fending them off this year!!!

It may be tough to be a small company, but they should really be careful about what they're doing and send the right stuff. If not, there are always other small companies that would be happy to have their business.

Perernnially,

You are absolutely right, and to be perfectly honest with you, I stopped ordering from them several years ago. Limited selection, high expense, and some disappointments. Brent and Becky, Scheepers, The Lily Garden and B&D Lilies got my business.

Looking at my Silver Sunbursts, you would be wise to get them out of there. I started with three bulbs, and I am going to have to move at least half a dozen stems that have gone out of bounds. They are indestrucible, so a low maintenence gardener with lots of space who likes the color would love to have them. Then you can get what you really want (and asked for!)

Keep fighting the good fight with the LB!

Thanks Donna. I don't intend to order from them again, and they don't really have anything more that I want anyway. Last year I also ordered from The Lily Nook (expensive, especially being in Canada) but they had some I couldn't find elsewhere, and from BuggyCrazy. I was happy with both of those orders.
