No need for alarm - this is an orb-weaving spider in the genus Micrathena; likely Micrathena gracilis - see http://tinyurl.com/nrez4j for an image. No orb weaving spider has a bite that is dangerous to humans. I once got one of these spiders in my mouth when I walked into its web with my mouth open (why it was open at that time, I cannot say). Nevertheless, the spider did not bite, but I must have spat it more than 10 feet!
