CLOSED: Large flying bug?

Lima, OH

I see these once in awhile, and when I do they are usually moving pretty briskly so it was difficult to get a decent pict. Anyone know what it is, and if so is it a good guy or not so good? I believe it is a good bug. Seems all it is around for is flower nectar. His size is a tad startling though.

Thanks for any insight anyone might be able to give me.

It's one of these clearwing moths, I'd guess it's a Snowberry Clearwing, Hemaris diffinis:

I never heard of them being a pest or anything like that.

Yes, definitely a "good" guy! (:o)

I see them around my phlox in the evening. I've never seen one during the day.

and I found a link with info there too.

I have one here that visits my blue butterfly bush during the day, i heard they mainly come out at dusk. It this true? It's a beauty! Very nice photo.

Thanks. I see them more in the late afternoon but that may be because those are also when I have time to be outside. I am outside often until 10AM and don't see many then so that may be a correct observation. They flock to most of my flowers but seem to love the lantana best.
