ive seen some beautiful pics of bindweed and Calystegia like in ohio and northern states. a friend in ohio is looking but hasnt found any growing wild so far. even though ohio considers them weeds.
so it seems to me these are becoming rarer in some places. we dont have any here and our wild pandarutura spelled wrong are becoming far and in between too.
i would love to be able to grow some in pots and see how they do here in my yard but it seems hard to find them.
does anyone have any to share?
wanted binweed or Calystegia
Isn't Calystegia considered false bindweed? I have plenty of real bindweed, but I don't think I could in good conscience ever send it to anyone. If you don't have it around, consider yourself lucky! I've never seen a plant so invasive- our conditions are extreme, our winters very cold and our summers very hot- nothing kills our bindweed. Just last week, I found several of my pea plants had been broken off at the base by bindweed- it literally choked my tomatoes to death last year before I realized what it was. I hope the plant you are looking for is a more kind variety! Good luck.
yes it is considered false bindweed. i am also wanting true bindweed as it is disappearing. want to try it in a pot to see if it can be controlled in its growth. i love things people hate. also want to see if real bindweed can be crossed with a tame morning glory to see if it can be controlled that way. so if you have seeds i would love to have a few
Hi Imzadi,
I pretty much found these
Calystegia sepium ssp. americana (hedge bindweed): http://ontariowildflowers.com/main/species.php?id=201
Calystegia arvensis (field binweed): http://ontariowildflowers.com/main/species.php?id=202
but as I have mentioned, I am not sure if they will set seeds.
The species below,
Calystegia spithamaea ssp. spithamaea (upright bindweed): http://ontariowildflowers.com/main/species.php?id=199, I might have found, but it may be just a field bindweed. I will go take pictures sometime this week. So please stay tune ;)
Let's just hope they do make seeds so you can plant them in your containers
Eliz
The different wild bindweed is really pretty regardless of how invasive they are. Most definitely should be contained in a pot.
Looks like you have quite a few species of bindweed growing in Canada, Eliz! :-)
I know maybe i should go up there. hehe i would stay though grew up in alaska so it would be home.
wow Debra that is so pretty.
Here are the roots, hardy perennial to minus 35 cel (tested Edmonton, Canada)
I wash the roots very carefully and treat with hydrogen peroxide 2% (harmless) 1 cap to 500ml water soak for 30 mins, then I wash and apply a harmless fungicide and place in sterile vermiculite.
They survived a 10 day journey to a fellow DG'er in the last 3 weeks and they were growing in the bag, this is what you would get from my trade
trade for now or later?
A possible lead for you, imzadi: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1017270/
I love my new Calystegia pubescens vine!
There is a webstore that sells the actual plants. They have a sale going on right now! Check it out:
