CLOSED: giant pod or cocoon?

Campobello, SC(Zone 7a)

This has been in the V of this tree in front of our house for a while now. I have no idea if it's some seed pod or cocoon but it's making my husband crazy. Tonight he went inside and got my camera and said "take a picture and post it to that Dave's place and find out what it is!" So, does anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
Kristen

what kind of tree is that? Does it bear flowers?

Hi missingrosie. Nope, it's just an oak tree. Other trees in the nearby area are various oak, dogwood, sweetgum, and some kind of nut, pig nut I think I heard people call it?

can you take it out with some tongs and get some better pictures? the picture you have is good and clear but it would be nice to see the whole thing.

Yes. Tomorrow when it's light out. DH wants to cut it open too. It's physically attached to the tree right now so I'm hoping we don't damage it taking it out. May have to use a razor blade to remove it.
I'll post them when I get them.
Thanks!

It is possible that this is a cocoon of a moth in the family Saturniidae (such as a cecropia moth) that has been dislodged from its attachment, perhaps by a bird or small mammal. See http://tinyurl.com/knc8uk for an image of one in a more 'natural' position.

Suunto, I think you are right! It looks like the cecropia moth. It is attached to where it is now so wonder if by chance it just happened to cocoon there? Regardless, I think at this point it's probably dead if they are supposed to hatch in early summer.
Thank you! My husband is going to be thrilled to finally know what this thing is.
