Good luck kb. Thats a bummer!
Compassion for Handicapped Gardeners #6
My wringer washer is the square kind from the 40's. I got it a couple months ago from a man near LA. I've had a couple newish washers; they don't last well here and are hard to repair. Tony, my friend who works for me, is about twenty years younger than I am but he also grew up with one. I am very happy with it and, should it break down, Tony will probably be able to fix it. However, they seem to keep running forever. Mine is in excellent shape both cosmettically and motor-wise. The man I bought it from (maybe thirty years old) thought for sure I was buying it as a decoraor item.
I also have a clothes line. No dryer.
Yesterday I got my chest freezer defrosted, did about a weeks' worth of dirty dishes, washed some of the clothes and material and got most of the bedroom brownbagged and sealed.
Felt good about all that but then was so achey I couldn't get to sleep for several hours.
But I'm feeling good today. Will finish the floor and hope to varnish it tomorrow.
Making plans to go to Ca. the end of the month. I'm getting some concrete molds. I'm hoping we can sell enough to pay Tony a better salary. He has one son at the university in La Paz and his younger son will be going next year. I can pay him enough to get by but if we can sell some concret stuff it could help him a lot.
Time to bite the bullet and go finish my floor. It's looking good.
hugs all around,
katie
Katie,
When you talk of "brown bagging" and varnishing, what exactly are you doing? Laying brown bags and varnishing over them, sort of like wallpaper??
I do hope you might post some pictures.
What type of concrete molds are you using? things like stepping stones? or Birdbaths?
BTW - how close to the beach are you? Don't man to ask so many questions and seem intrusive, but you are very interesting and I love hearing about what you are doing in your home improvement projects.
wishing cool breezes your way today!
hugs,
sheri
Katie, Think i'm jealous of your washer. I remember them too. I hang clothes out some but i'm a lazy booger and use the dryer. If i did'nt have a choice, i would'nt have trouble adapting to a clothes line. I guess the proper term would be a solar dryer.LOL
Hope the cement molds workout. Did i miss what you plan to make? I need to go back and reread all these threads
I'm working on making a large poster calender to put in front of my tv to keep up with my doctors appointments and stuff. My memory, not good anyway, is getting worse.
Did i ask if you have cold weather in winter or can you garden all year long?
There are a couple threads on brownbagging in the Trash to Treasure forum. Or you can google it. It's using brown contractor's paper (or bags) with the proper sealer before and after and the paper glued down with the correct wallpaper paste. A woman named Bonnie Moyne (sp?) developed the technique with much experimentation. It comes out looking like leather. The floor needs to be varnished for protection but when done on walls it's not needed.
We'll have molds for birdbaths, birdfeeders, stepping stones, planters and garden friends like gnomes and animals. We can paint some and mosiac some or sell them for others to mosiac, etc. IConcrete is still fairly cheap so the big expense is the molds.
This is a subtropical climate so I can garden year round though things like tomatoes don't survive our hottest weather. I've been in this house for about five years. A lot of my work up until now has been getting in trees for fruit and shade. Seeing what will survive our summers. Now I'm starting to try more vegetables. Not much success yet. I do have drgon fruits which are growing well. I'm very excited about them. One reason I'm going to Ca. at the end of the month is to attend a pitaya (dragon fruit) festival in Irvine. We have some wild ones here but they disappear quickly between birds and people. I did find one ripe one once and it was very good.
I'm close to a beach but I don't go often. It's quite rocky and I'm not real stable. Ther's a beach I can drive to with the dogs - just a couple miles and it's private anda little safer.
The beast beaches are about twenty miles south of here - the Bay of Conception - a very popular tourist destination.
I have a view of the Sea of Cortez from my from yard. From my sewing room and bedrooom I have views of the Mulege River, the only year-round river in Baja. All the others dry up in the summer. The river runs into the sea just down the hill from my house.
The last part of the bedroom floor is drying. Varnish tomorrow or the next day.
Time to clean up from the dogs messes made last night in the sewing room. And continue my laundry.
Hope I've answered all the questions. Keep asking. I love to talk about what I'm doing here.
hugs,
katie
P.S. Still have to learn how to do pictures. Soon.
Wow! I remember reading about that brown bagging to leather look process some time ago I think it was back in my Macrame "just post Hippie" days (hehehe) Yes, yes we sure do want to see pictures. Your views sound breathtaking.
You mentioned Michigan winters somewhere once. Are you from there and followed your dream to Baja? I do not want to be envious, but I sure have to say I'm drooling a wee bit. LOL I got uprooted from Coronado to Ithaca, NY in Jan and we landed in the middle of the worst blizzard of 30 years there. I was one very confused and cold 7year old!!
So. CA has some wonderful rocky cove beaches that I've never seen at E Coast beaches. I've only been south of NY though, so perhaps there are rocky coves way up northeast, but I'd think too cold to enjoy.
It sounds like you make concrete statuary for tourist and others to buy. That doesn't sound like a bad life Katie. Need any helper? I have a really big tent ^_^ and love creative endeavors!
Oh and I don't think I've ever even seen a picture of a square washer like that. What a grand find for you!!
When you decide to try loading some digital pics, the people in the computer or the camera forum can probably tell you exactly how to do it by knowing your camera and computer model. I am so puter dense it is sad!
Are you feeling better today? Your tummy, eyes and other parts? I sure hope so and you are on my prayer list ^_^
I just spent more than an hour on the chat line with eBay. At the end I was told my account "really" was hijacked. This after three weeks, emails to eBay, Half.com and Paypal that were ignored and hours online with chat people going over and over the same material. I blew a fuse (or broke a circuit breaker). Then they launched into telling me what I should do to keep this from happening. When it's all their mistakes. I wrote something nasty and disconnected. They start out convinced it must be my fault (the customer is always to blame) and even when they can see that they are at fault, they try to blame me.
I'm also crying because there are eBay people Ii like to buy from but I'm going to close my account when the computer will let me. And I'm crying because I hate it when people admit they've made a mistake still insist on trying to blame me. I've been telling Half.com, eBay and Paypal for three weeks what was going on. They did noting. Now they are discovering that my account was hijacked, they ignored the information and now it's all my fault. They aren't interested in how they let this happen; they just want to blame me.
I'm just furious. Going into the sewing room with A?C to take my mind off this.
Thanks for letting me vent.
katie
i know just how you feel Katie. Dell made an unauthorized charge to my account. I have been talking to them (foreign customer service!) for 5 months. Each month I got told that my account would be credited. I have always paid off my balance before it ever accrued any interest. Well I never got a refund and last month they suspended my account due to being 2 months past due. I had long since paid off what I owed + some extra in the hopes of protecting my credit. Finally got Texas Cust Svc and am supposed to be getting a refund check. who knows how long if Ever my credit report will be repaired. And I was getting ready to apply to refinance my home. Boo Hiss!!!
I will just quote Anna Rosanna Danna- "It's always something!!"
Well, in less than a month I've had it with both Yahoo and eBay. Neither one has any security worthy of the name.
Have you checked into filing a Small Claim against Dell. Lawsuits tend to get attention when everything else fails.
katie
Good idea!
Instead of worrying about what they are doing to your credit repor, file a claim against them. You can get a judgement and wreck havoc against them. It's more fun than trying to defend yourself. Make them defend themselves. They can't and they know it. Filing fee is usually about $35. Judges tend to hate companies who try to blame their errors and harrassment on computers. Turn the tables on the b#$@%&$s.
I'm taking my revenge against eBay by tying up as much chat time as possible. And as I get emaisl from people the thief cheated in my name I tell the people who have been defrauded to call email and caht with eBay, Half.com and Paypal and to tie up as much time as they can, insisting on getting help and not being put off.
I think I'm starting a revolution. I sure hope so.

Go, Katie, go!
Way to go Katie. Threaten em with one of the TV court shows. Companys wont go there.
And post your problems with them everywhere!!
Mid-August in the Baja is not a good time to have a crisis. Or two. This past week has been hot, humid and almost with breezes.
The stress with ebay finally took a physical and I got "la grippe." Had a stomach ache from noon yesterday to noon today. Intermittent headaches were included. Slept very little last night. Not awful pain, just enough to keep me awake. At noon today I surrendered and took a pain pill. Slept all afternoon and feel a lot better now.
I continue to get emails from people who were cheated by the person who stole my ebay ID. I tell them to file in Small claims and close all their ebay related accounts due to lax security.. I sent a request to close my acccount to ebay and the threaten me with losing my profile. I tell them my profile has been trashed by the one buyer who has decided to blame me for the identity theft, they know it and have done nothing so their threat is ALMOST funny. In a rather nice turn, several of the people who have beeen cheated have responded to my email to them, thanking me for telling them what happened.
The other good news is that BofA responded well. They obviously take security seriously. And their customer chat people are delighted to have a customer who is polite and cooperative so I get nice thank notes from them - beyond the canned responses they are requiredt o give. Comparing BofA responses to those of ebay makes it even clearer how really awful ebay's so-called security is.
Sheir - you can down with your tent any time but I suggest you wait until mid-October when our temperatures drop considerably.
I'm scheduled to go to Ca. towards the end of next week. Must find someone who can care for my oldest dog, Misty, as she howls miserably when left alone. I am getting a load of molds and it would be very hard to take her with me but that may be what has to happen.
I'm still shaking my head over ebay. I can't believe that a company as big as they are, based entirely on internet sales, can be so irresponsible.
katie
Katie , when i get upset i can't sleep either. and it is amazing how different things seem after a good sleep. Hope you get things settled with e-bay soon.
Ebay insists I explain why I want to close my account. I've sent them three emails. NO answers. The account is still open.
kb
Still no response from Ebay. I'm still getting emails from people who have been defrauded. I tell them about th problems and ebay's lack of action. From recommending they file for a refund, I've moved on to suggesting they close all ebay related accounts and file in Samll Claims Court.
Thanks to cando1's suggestion I am now suggesting they contact Court TV shows. Every so often I write to ebay to tell them what I'm doing. Still no response. My account is still open.
Getting ready to leave tomorrow for a quick trip up to Ca. There's a pitaya fruit festival in Irvine on Sat. that I'm signed up for. Tours of pitaya farms on Sunday. I need to pick up a crate of molds that I bought and visit a woman who has over 300 variaties of epis.
Tony and I did our first concrete pouring day before yesterday. I've been collecting molds for ages but between building the house and the garden, there always seems to be something more important to do. The tihings we poured have turned out well. His daughter (9 yrs old) and her two friends will have fun painting some of the things. Before they know it, we'll have them pouring concrete. And using power tools! The revolution continues.

ANOTHER lady with “concrete” principles! This is more widespread than I thought. :-)
Katie that's AWFUL! you should be able to close your profile whenever you want to. I generally like eBay, but I'm not so sure any more, lol.
Carrie
I've never used E-bay. I'm a squerrel and never let anything go. When i go on a buying spree, I go to a store or looking for garage sales or Salvation Army. 2 years ago i went to 5 different towns around looking for flower pots. That was fun.
I'm starting # 7 as this one has gotten rather long. It only took 6 weeks or so to get 101 posts on this thread. Rather impressive for such a small group.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEAFLADY!
