I have two bugs to query: one is a flying, actually floating bug that loves my crape myrtles (I now think it might be a woolly aphid?) The second is all over my black-eyed susans (and others), mostly cottony stuff on the stems which when touched of disturbed, hop off like tiny white moths jumping like a flea. What is it? Thanks sue
CLOSED: white fuzzy hoppy bugs
Well - whatever it is --it is horrendous this year. I have it on plants that I typically don't see it on - like the red twig dogwood (what is left after the japanese beetles) and shasta daisy and edgeworthia too. I saw whitefly and the cotton like stuff looked more like mealy bug --but -- I am sure I saw whitefly. I was thinking a combo of the two
These could be planthoppers (Hemiptera/Auchenorrhyncha; superfamily Fulgoroidea), such as those in the family Flatidae (see http://tinyurl.com/lqhxd4 and http://tinyurl.com/kj52el for examples).
