Gardenia - rooted cuttings - when to pot up or plant out

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

I've been successful in rooting cuttings taken from my daisy gardenia. Stuck them 6-24 and roots are already showing in the pot (clear plastic).

At what point do I pot individually or can I just plant right into their permanent spots in the garden bed?

My thanks for all who take the time to share their personal knowledge. You help to make gardening much more fun.

Is it hardy in your zone? If you know for sure that it is, go ahead and plant it where it is to grow - just keep it moist until it adapts to its new home.

One other thing, and this is from experience.Be sure to protect it from yourself. How soon we forget. Mike

Kay ... yes, it is supposed to be hardy to 0 degrees, so that would be well within our winter temps. This is my first year growing it so time will tell regarding the hardiness of this little plant in this area. The mother plant is putting out new growth and buds so she is settling in nicely.

Mike ... do you mean not to over baby the new cuttings? :-)

In my situation, I have a tendency to plant too close at early planting.I let young cuttings get at least 3 Yrs. nursary time.Mike

Mike, I can relate to what you said - my yard looks like a jungle, because I thought the new plants I put in looked 'sparse' - LOL! You should see me trying to mow my back yard with a riding lawn mower - it's really quite funny, even to me.

I just make bigger borders. My hobbie is not mowing. Mike

Me, too!

Mike,

Ok, now I understand. I like open spaces between plant groupings in my garden so I'm pretty good about not planting things too closely but like Kay, I have to work at remembering the size of the "adult" plant. LOL

I'm also new at propagating plants so this is a real learning experience for me. I wish I had an area to set aside as a growing out area but my garden is fairly small. Just enjoy watching things grow and these cuttings surely do have a lot of growing to do. :-)

My thanks to you both for taking the time to help.

Mary, I started out like that, in fact I got started because of an autistic friend, who passed away some time back.He had an unbelievable nack for propagating plants, and even taught me to identify most plants by smelling the fresh dug root.I can't identify all, but can sure get the family, and thats something you can't learn in books.Fortunately for me he liked me, and enjoyed being around me.I miss him.
I started by using the box like he built, and grew from there. There is no limit to new found ways to propagate.
I call this my plant "ghetto".It started by "add a piece". Mike
