Nutmegger and...?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

A couple years ago I got a lily from BC labeled as Citronella ~ that we've been wondering about. Nutmegger finally bloomed and I offer the two for comparison.

Tell me what you think ~

In all cases, Citronella is shown first, then Nutmegger.
Here are the buds

My Citronellas look the same no matter the source; I have purchased from several sources. Where did you get Nutmegger? It doesn't seem to be as widely available as Citronella is.

They both look the same to me. BEV

They look the same to me too. But Citronella is a strain and can differ somewhat from one to another. But all that I have purchased have looked the same. I really don't know what Nutmegger looks like. I expect it is similar but after looking at parentages in the Lily Register I would not expect it to look just like Citronella.

Nor I ~ Nutmegger is listed as having brown spots and Citronella as having small black spots.

The photo in B&D catalog shows Citronella having small spots. Will the real Citronella please stand up? LOL!

Joe Halinar of Cascade Bulb and Seed did a lot of work using Nutmegger several years ago. At that time he had photos of it on his site. And at that time I didn't pay much attention because I disliked that type of form and color. Guess I've changed my tastes since then.

Here's another one of my seedlings from "Citronella".

Nice ~ Citronella and what??

I have it down as OP but I may have hand pollinated and not protected. Now days I do like Lefty recommends, keep track of the daddy but mark it as dirty. LOL again!!

I have a Nutmegger that looks nothing like what you are depicting Moby. I purchased mine after seeing a stem in one of the shows I attended a few years back. I found an online picture that is a match for the one I have, link is below.

Citronella is a strain so like many of the strains there are variations possible, I however have found them to be remarkably similar, varying in height mostly. The lily that I find it is most identical to is L, liechtilinini (sp). I have Citronella from 2 sources and liechtilinini growing in the same area and find no difference between them at all. It was also a topic of discussion at the NALS Show this past June with no conclusions reached.

Wowzers that's a long link, let's see if it works. . . . . . .

They sure all look the same to me. Nutmegger came from a fellow IRLS member.

This is a picture of my Nutmegger (left) and Citronella aka L. liechtilinini (right)

The Nutmegger is distinctly yellow, while the citronella has orange tones that weren't evident until I put them side by side.

Ah... just what I was looking for. While my blooms are yellow, they're closer to what I'd call a golden yellow. Thanks so much Sue.

You're welcome dearest! The stems on Nutmegger are green also, I think a bit of the pedicle is visible in the above pic.

Man, you guys are good. :)

Well, at least llilyfan is. :)

Yes, Sue is pretty darn good. But you're not too bad either. :)

I'd been watching for this thread since Moby said she would start it, but I still some how missed it!

It seems clear that Nutmegger also has less substantive petals that curl (not just recurve) too. And that is also the consensus with our North Star Lily Society group. Last season when I was trying to ID my supposed Citronella (not), I came to a tentative conclusion that it must be L.lancifolium var. flaviflorum. But now that I have seen more pics on the Yahoo Lilium group, its definitely not that. Seems that Nutmegger (which I had never considered, or seen before) fits the bull perfectly. 'Cept, does it produce bulbils? Mine does every year, although not even a peep of them showing yet.

No sign of bulbils here.

I know this is an old thread, but just for general information, Lily Nook has an excellent picture gallery that comes in handy for solving puzzles like this. On their home page, click on "Picture Library". Here is their home page: http://www.lilynook.mb.ca/

By the way, sometimes my 'Nutmegger' has bulbils -- It's the tiger lily in it, obviously, but I don't know why only sometimes. Not this year.
