Happy Ponds- the upside of ponding

UV filters are the best things a pond owner can have! They also help kill some of the bacterias that cause fish problems. I get my bulbs off ebay, I've found good prices on there. They say that bulbs should be changed 1x year...even if it's still glowing, it's only half power...

This is true - even for those of us that do not have our ponds running year round. The power from the uv bulb is never the same in the second year - we tried carrying the bulbs over another year with the idea that we had only used half the hours of the bulbs. So, we order new bulbs every spring.

I have teh same 'discussion' with Damien about the bulbs. I have two new bulbs for this year so we will see what the difference is from last year.

When you replace your bulbs...hose out the inside sleeve as well. Many times they gunk up with a layer of sludge, so a lot of the water passing through never sees UV light. :)

Excellent point Mary. I know that DH cleans the sleeves in the uv lights when it is time to shut everything down and bring them in.

How do you clean the inside. Sluice with ammonia?

Athens, PA

DH uses white vinegar to clean the sleeves.

Thanks. Will give it a try.

I washed out everything including the black plastic housing. Got a little sludge. Am anxious to get new bulb back in.

That can be quite a job. I always feel better after it is finished though, don't you?

Charlie put new bulb into clarifier yesterday so I expect it to be clearer in 3 or 4 days. I like seeing fish clearly cause you can spot skin problems quicker.
I read almost everything on that link you posted as it was very interesting. Was surprised about the sleeping sickness.
I am going to attend the Central Fl. Koi Show in March in Orlando and 1 day is an all day seminar for just $10. so I will certainly attend that. Bound to learn somethng I don't know. Also, going to look for a blue koi. I think they are beautiful.
Mothermole,
Sure hope you can do someting for your fish. With them being under ice thats a problem.

Bonnie, remember I have the tiny blue butterfly for you....it's only 4-5 inches, but pretty. :) I just need a free day to finally get it to you!

Hi MerryMary,
I'm looking forward to seeing you again. and giving little blue one a home.
You will be amazed at the growth your babies have attained.

Carolyn,
I posted my comments about Mothermole on wrong thread. My old PC is so slow I forget where I was. Hope she sees it here.
