Both of those look similar to hybrids I did using P. bipinnatifidum ("selloum") and P. goeldii. I did that cross many years ago, but others have done a similar cross and probably released their versions. Because there are so many selloum morphotypes out there, you can get a variety of different types of hybrids just by choosing the right type of "selloum".
I call my hybrids "African Fantasy".
LariAnn
What's your favorite foliage aroid?
its too sexy for its pot
Me want it! ((panting))
Although finicky I love my Frydek.. I love the black stem macrorrhizo!! Where can I get that LariAnn??? I have the macrorrhizo, Frydek, Fontanensii, Black Magic, Colocasia, African Mask and so on!!! I love'em. Can you tell me where to get that one!!! It's a beauty!!!
New leaf on A. Sinuata looks like its ready to take off in size
Hey Grub Worm I like the Alocasia Portei too. Got any or where did you get that??? :)
The Portei won't live outdoors here.... but I would bring that baby in. Like I do all of mine. Of course, significant other crazy. He would get over it here
When I was in Papua New Guinea I came across these large Alocasia portei which has seed. I'd already got seed from another (I think) Alocasia back up in the mountains, but didn't have a clue which specie because it was pretty battered and little other than the seed pod remained. Seeing as Alocasia seeds aren't a prohibited import here but they have to be clean, I proceeded to clean them all to bring back home.
At home after planting the seeds in pots (100mm), a little research suggested that they shouldn't have been cleaned as it makes them unviable. So I thought, "too late anyway, let's see what happens". Put them in the bathroom as we're in winter and being shut in will keep the edge off the lower temps and keep the humidity higher.
This is a photo of the Alocasia portei in Papua New Guinea, reaching over 3 metres high.
I'd given up hope of anything happening when last weekend all these shoots came rocketing up, 6 weeks after planting. Only thing is I've forgotten which was planted where. 3 pots have 7 shoots so far, 2 pots have nothing. I suspect it's the Alocasia portei that's sprouted, although the leaves look nothing like it so far. Would they just be juvenile leaves?
Photo of the most advanced shoot.
Wow look at those trunks!!!!!!
Is that you in the photo, tropicbreeze? How tall are you? If you're. say, 6 ft that thing is12-15 ft tall!
I'm just around 1.8 metres, which google converts to 5.9 feet. And the plant's about twice that. Do you know whether seedling/juvenile portei have "normal" leaves?
Yes those plants look amazing. It is very seldom I have seen photos or plants of that stature. On your question on the seedling yes it would only be a spear or heart shaped leaf and a mature leaf may look totally different. So if this was a porteii seedling it will not show it's normal foliage I would say until the 4th to 6th leaf you should see more of it's adult features.
Wow!!! Awesome!!!
Well, I have A. portei, and mine has never even thought about getting that big, LOL. It unfortunately has to frost back every year and come back up in spring. I had a few with trunks, eventually the serial hard freezes over 2-3 winters damage them and the plant has to come back up from below ground and kind of start over. My biggest trunk was maybe 8-10 inches tall.
I would have to leave that baby inside here. It's a jungle in here all winter, but that's my key to sanity. My man says it's insanity because I do it over and over. LOL
The blackstem mac hybrid in my picture is one of only two in existence. I have a lot of the regular blackstem mac if you are interested. When I crossed the blackstem mac with alba, I got a number of seedlings, but only a few turned up with the dark stems. Others were all green or mottled, and even a few pink ones. I don't know if the pink will hold up to maturity or will fade. One that i potted up when pinkish has become all green with occasional dark pinstripes.
LariAnn
Wow!!! That is great!! I would like the regular black stemmed mac. How do I get one from you?? The others sound interesting also. I know you are the pro when it comes to aroids. You and Brian. Brian is here in my town, but he doesn't have that one. He has many, and I buy from him as well. :) Julie
Julie, you've got dmail.
LariAnn, I'd like dmail also!!
Marianne
If the offer is still open, could I also ask for Dmail, LariAnn?
Jean
Marianne and Jean, you both have dmail.
This is one of my very favorites. I bought it at Lowes a year or more ago for $10 (Its been through the winter at least once). Its Colocasia "Maui Magic". It gets really large really fast in the growing season and if you give it water or it gets rain, it gets really big!
That's me (no head, LOL) for scale
Hmmm favorite aroid, has to be, for me, Monstera delicosa :) Sorry, but I've loved it since I was way way way younger :) hehehhe.
But I do love my other aroids. I'll have to work on getting a Konjak now :)
If and when I have the money :) and job and other things :) hehehehe
Those are all pretty. I love that Mojito.
My Ele Paio gets burned if a sunbeam even touches it for a little while. I call it my vampire Colocasia. How do you keep your variegated ones from being burnt?
water and lots of it
Wow!! Lariann. You now have business. LOL Julie
Some accidently got a lil bug spray on them. They didn't like that!!
Lari Ann, I'm interested in the Black Mac too.
