ants hurt me :(

i made a hill in my yard with a bunch of dirt and sod from making my other garden,this was last year.well this year i started to plant on it and i was shocked at all the ants that appeared when i dug my 1st hole.there is hundreds,they are small but they sure pack a punch when they bite,they were attacking me on my legs and hands.i did notice that a couple had wings.i have never had ants attack me before.does anyone know what kind of ants these are?and are they going to harm my plants roots?i guess color wise they were maybe brown.
