I found this big beetle newly came up from the ground among some monkey-grass. Are they the same kind that often found hiding on firelogs kept outdoor in the winter? What are they?

This beetle is in the family Passalidae, they go by a variety of common names and are eusocial, usually living in colonies in rotting wood. Both the adults and larvae communicate through stridulation (making sound by rubbing adjacent body parts together). See http://tinyurl.com/mr6rd2 for detailed information.
Hah, that's what the saying
Quoting:
came from. I need to do more reading this evening, and explore with friends about the meaning of that statement implies. Thanks kindly for your I.D.
