advice on Shrimp Plant Justicia?

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

I planted two Shrimp Plants Justicia brandegeana this spring in large pots. The salmon colored bracts are done flowering and are now dying off kinda of getting little dead spots on them should i trim these off? The plants don't seem to be actively growing . i'm wondering if they are not getting adequate drainage. Has anyone grown this plant? what should it and i be doing right now?

I have this plant planted in the ground under a black walnut tree. Its been there for a couple of years. I don't do anything special to it and so far it grown and blooms every year. It gets watered by sprinklers and really no extra care.
Hope that helps

Thanks. I must be doing something wrong then, it doesn't look that good.

Your welcome, I forgot to mention that mine is in shade under a tree and is protected somewhat from the cold and heat.

The bracts are doing what they are supposed to do - just let them fall off on their own. Mine are in the ground and come back each year - the bracts on mine do the same thing - I just leave them alone.

After it is done blooming I chop mine back to about 6 inches and it grows and blooms again. It gets ugly after blooming and i don't like to look at it. I think this practice has made it get bushier. Mine are about 6 years old.

I have red and lemon lime and the blooms get black as you describe. I do nothing and I agree w/ others who said that's what they do. your plant is fine. I whack them once a yr so that eventually they will become full, compact shrubs.
